Former Cleveland Browns Coach Dick Modzelewski called Walter Johnson “the best defensive tackle Cleveland has ever had.” Some say he is the finest football player Cal State L.A. has ever had.
A Pro Bowler as a Cleveland defensive tackle, the 6-foot-3, 255-pound Johnson won honor after honor as a guard and linebacker at Cal State L.A. He earned first-team Little All-America and Little All-Coast honors, second-team University Division All-Coast honors and was a unanimous pick on the All-California Collegiate Athletic Association team.
He also held Cal State L.A.’s shot put record and was the program’s first 50-foot thrower.
Johnson was Cleveland’s No. 2 pick in 1965 and he played 12 years in the National Football League. He intercepted two passes and scored two touchdowns on fumble recoveries.
