Martin Vasquez helped Cal State L.A. win two California Collegiate Athletic Association titles in three seasons and he became the program’s first player to play professional soccer. Vasquez played as a member of the Los Angeles Lazers of the MISL in 1984 and with the Tacoma Washingtons in 1985.
Vasquez also played for Atlas of the Mexican League and was with the Universidad de Guadalajara for two seasons before playing for Puebla and Veracruz of the Mexican League from 1989-92.
He later went on to a successful career in coaching and at one time was the head coach of Chivas USA.
At Cal State L.A., Vasquez led the nation in scoring with 29 goals as a freshman in 1981 and helped the Golden Eagles reach the NCAA championship match.
In 1982, he was chosen to the All-America and Far West Region first teams and was selected as the conference’s Most Valuable Player in 1982 and co-MVP in 1983.
He still holds school records for most goals and points (64) in a season and career records for goals (67) and points (169). He still holds CCAA records for most goals and points in a season and most goals and points in a career.
