Tina Mochizuki was Cal State L.A.’s No. 1 singles player for four years and was a national runner-up in 1973. She graduated from Cal State L.A. in 1973 and was later a coach for Cal State L.A. for 21 seasons.
Mochizuki played professionally from 1981-88 and earned a high ranking of 79 in the world. Along the way, she advanced to numerous quarterfinal and semifinal matches, including the Virginia Slims of Newport, Tulsa Open, Arizona Open, Japan Open and Borden Classic. She owns career wins over Tracy Austin, Steffi Graf and Monica Seles and was the No. 1-ranked woman in Southern California in 1979.
She stayed active in competition and played in age-group matches. She amassed 54 gold balls and was No. 1 in the nation in the 50s from 2002-06. She won four national championships in 2008, capturing titles in the 5 indoor singles and doubles as well as 55 grass court singles and doubles.
She represented the United States in several Maureen Connolly Cup competitions and was inducted to the International Club in 2007. In 2006, she was named the No. 1 player in the world in her age group and won championships in the 50s U.S. Indoor Singles and 50 U.S. Grass Singles divisions. She also won U.S. National 40 and 45s Grass Court singles and doubles championships.
As a coach, she led Cal State L.A. into the NCAA playoffs eight times and coached six All-America players. Cal State L.A. earned 24 All-CCAA awards during her tenure and two CCAA Player of the Year awards.
