Nicole Duncan Chance joined an elite group of collegiate athletes when she starred for three seasons at Cal State L.A.
Â
She became only the fourth athlete – regardless of gender -- to win the NCAA Championship in the 100 meter dash, 200 and the long jump in the same year (2002) and she tied the NCAA women’s Division II record for individual championships in a year with the three titles.
Â
She concluded her college career as the most decorated track and field athlete in Cal State L.A. history with a total of eight NCAA individual titles and 14 All-America awards. Five of those eight titles came during the 2001-02 school year. She also won national indoor championships in the long jump and 60-meter dash before winning the three outdoor track and field titles in 2002.
Â
She joined three other track athletes who completed the 100-200-long jump trifecta: Lisa Dillard of NCAA Division III Christopher Newport in 1987, Chandra Sturrup of Division II Norfolk State in 1992 and the great Jesse Owens in 1935 and 1936 at Ohio State.
Â
Duncan was named the NCAA Division II Collegiate Women Athlete of the Year in 2002 and was presented with the prestigious Honda Award at a national convention in Dallas, Tex.
Â
She came to Cal State L.A. after competing for one year at Iowa Wesleyan College, an NAIA program. She won three NAIA championships as a freshman and was second in a fourth event.
Â
Her first season with Cal State L.A. came in 1999 and she won her first NCAA championship in the indoor long jump. After redshirting in 2000, she returned in 2001 and won NCAA titles in the indoor long jump and outdoor long jump while finishing second in the indoor 55-meter dash. She was the CCAA Female Track and Field Athlete of the Year and the West Region Female Athlete of the Year.
Â
That set the stage for her record-breaking year in 2002. In her four years of collegiate competition, Duncan was an 11-time national champion and earned a total of 18 All-America awards.
Â
She is now living in Atlanta, where she is a teacher.
Â
Duncan is married to Durrell Chance and the couple has a pair of daughters, Kionna and Asia.
