Monica Tokoro was the most prolific scorer in Cal State L.A. women’s basketball history and helped the Golden Eagles to their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance in 2006.

Tokoro finished her four-year career as the program’s No. 1 all-time scorer with 1,944 points, more than 400 points ahead of the No. 2 scorer. She also holds the career mark for assists with 576.

Tokoro was a two-time All-American, earning honors in 2003 and 2004, and a three-time Academic All-District honoree. She earned All-CCAA first team honors all four years she competed and earned All-Region honors three times.

She played for Cal State L.A. from 2001-06 and made an immediate impact. As a freshman in the 2001-02 season, she earned the first of her four first-team All-CCAA honors after averaging 14.0 points per game.

As a sophomore, Tokoro led the CCAA in scoring with 25.1 points per game. She set a CCAA record by scoring 49 points against Cal State Stanislaus on March 1, 2003 and put up three of the top four single-game scoring marks in program history during that season.

By the time she completed her junior season, Tokoro had become the program’s all-time leader in points and assists. She earned All-America and All-Region honors for a second straight year after averaging 20.0 points per game.

After sitting out the 2004-05 season, Tokoro returned for her final season on the court and helped the Golden Eagles qualify for the NCAA playoffs for the first time in 2006. Tokoro led the team in scoring with 14.6 points per game and the Golden Eagles compiled a 20-8 overall record and a 14-6 record in conference play. The overall record was the best for Cal State L.A. since a 21-6 mark in 1978-79 and was only the second 20-win season in the program’s history.

Tokoro was also an outstanding student at Cal State L.A. and graduated in 2006 with a degree in criminal justice. In addition to earning three Academic All-District awards, she also was an Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar in 2003.

Tokoro, originally from Honolulu, HI, currently lives in Pasadena and is a police officer for the Los Angeles Police Department, assigned with the Northeast Division Gang Detectives. She still enjoys playing basketball, hiking, hanging out with her dogs, going to the beach and other outdoor activities.
