Walt Williamson held many different positions while at Cal State L.A. – from a physical education instructor to an assistant football coach, and from a head track and field coach to an athletics director. Yet, Williamson’s Hall of Fame accolades will concentrate on his achievements as the head men’s track and field coach.

From 1976-80, Williamson guided the Golden Eagles to four NCAA Top-10 finishes in 1977 (3rd), 1979 (7th) and 1980 (2nd). In 1978, he led Cal State L.A. to its first NCAA Division II track and field national championship. During that spectacular year, he also earned Coach of the Year honors. In 1977, Williamson led his squad to its first California Collegiate Athletic Association title in 10 years.

When he concluded his reign as the head coach of the men’s program, he had coached 52 All-Americans and five individual national champions. He was Cal State L.A.’s Athletics Director from 1981 to 1982.
