Korina Kemp-Riggin was a major reason the Cal State L.A. women’s volleyball program began to earn great success in the early 1990s.

Kemp played for the Golden Eagles from 1991-94 and helped Cal State L.A. earn its first-ever NCAA Tournament bid in 1992. The Golden Eagles reached the national semi-finals in 1992 and reached the regional championship match in her final two seasons, 1993-94.

She was one of the top outside hitters in the nation and became one of the program’s first two-time AVCA All-Americans in 1994. She earned second-team All-America honors as a junior in 1993 and became the program’s first-ever first-team All-American in 1994. She and teammate Andrea Ferchaw both received their second All-America nods in 1994. Ferchaw, who was inducted into Cal State L.A.’s Hall of Fame in 2009, earned her All-America honors in 1992 and 1994. Kemp also earned first-team All-CCAA honors in 1993-94 and received All-Region honors as well.

Cal State L.A. had only one winning season in the program’s history before Kemp’s sophomore season in 1992 when the Golden Eagles went 25-10 and made a strong postseason run to the national semi-finals. After finishing second to longtime nemesis Cal State Bakersfield in the CCAA, the Golden Eagles beat UC Riverside and Cal Poly Pomona in the regionals. Cal State L.A. then beat North Dakota State to advance to the national semi-finals, where the Golden Eagles fell to Portland State.

Kemp had an outstanding junior season and received first-team All-CCAA and second-team All-America honors after helping the Golden Eagles to a 22-9 record and a spot in the regional championship match, where they fell to Cal State Bakersfield in four games. As a senior, she led the Golden Eagles to a program-record 18 consecutive wins to start the season and then to the regional championship match once again. Cal State L.A. had a national ranking as high as No. 2 during the season.

Kemp is No. 2 on Cal State L.A.’s career list for aces with 169 and No. 5 in kills with 1,271.

She graduated from Cal State L.A. in 1995 and majored in communications.

Kemp married Mitch Riggin in 1999 and they live in Cave Creek, AZ. She works as a camera operator for live sporting events, including Major League Baseball, National Basketball Association and National Football League contests.
