Marge Callahan headed Cal State L.A.’s highly-successful co-ed archery program. She coached 33 All-Americans, 43 All-Region honorees, one individual national champion and one national championship team.
She never had a team finish lower than third in the nation every year from 1976-84. She led a team to the national title in 1979 and had an individual national champion, Mike Gerard, that year.
Callahan was named the national Archery Coach of the Year in 1982 and one of her archers, Val Rosas, won the U.S. Sports Festival championship in 1985.
She was appointed to the department in 1978 to coach archery and badminton and she subsequently served as associate director of women’s and co-educational athletics. She earned her bachelor’s degree from USC and received her Master’s degree at Cal State L.A. in 1969.
Her athletic prowess included golf and she won the Brookside Women’s Golf championship 20 times.
