Lennart Hedmark turned defeat into a victory.

A world-class javelin thrower, Hedmark finished second in the NCAA championships as a sophomore in 1965, but injured his throwing arm the next year. Switching to the decathlon, Hedmark ended up making three Swedish Olympic teams and setting a world record for the best javelin throw in decathlon competition.

Hedmark finished 11th in the 1968 Olympic decathlon, was injured in the 1972 Games and was eighth at the Montreal Games in 1976.

He also took second in the 1971 European championships and won four Nordic decathlon championships. Hedmark broke the Swedish decathlon record 11 times and the Swedish pentathlon record twice.

In 1968, he set California Collegiate Athletic Association and Cal State L.A. decathlon records that stood until 1991.
