Dr. Fleur Yano served as the Faculty Athletics Representative for nine years from 1987-96 and was a member of the Cal State L.A. faculty for a total of 32 years.
 
She had a distinguished career in the field of theoretical nuclear physics and served at Cal State L.A. with commendable dedication and commitment. In addition to her assignments and responsibility as a professor of physics, Yano also chaired the Department of Physics and Astronomy and was the Interim Dean of the School of Letters and Science.
 
She was nominated for the Hall of Fame based on her leadership, integrity, dedication and commitment during her nine years as the Faculty Athletics Representative. Her hard work and outstanding contributions to the program was recognized by members of the Intercollegiate Athletics Board and by the staff of the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics.
 
As Cal State L.A.’s Faculty Athletics Representative, Yano monitored the eligibility and academic progress of Golden Eagle student-athletes. She was elected to the Intercollegiate Athletics Board and held her position until her retirement in 1996.
 
Yano joined the Cal State L.A. faculty in the Department of Physics and Astronomy in 1964. She served on the Academic Senate and chaired the Educational Policy Committee during her tenure. She was also the resident director for the CSU study-abroad program in Sweden for one year, and the coordinator of the University’s China exchange program.
 
She has stayed busy in retirement and has several activities and hobbies. She edited a book published by the University of Illinois Press, “Unbound Spirit: Letters of Flora Belle Jan” in 2009 and she is the treasurer of the Palos Verdes Peninsula Branch of the American Association of University Women.
 
She is also heavily involved in art projects (totem pole painting, sand painting, ceramic mosaics) and enjoys tennis, golf, biking and traveling. Her most recent trip was to Amsterdam, Paris and London to visit art museums, see plays and hear classical concerts.
 
Her husband, Al Yano, is a professor emeritus of physics at Long Beach State. One son, Robert Yano, and his family reside in Long Beach. Another son, Bobby Yano, attends Long Beach City College and a third son, Julian, plays on the tennis team at Long Beach Wilson High School.
