Carey Simons is still listed among the all-time Cal State L.A. Top-10 in five different track and field events and he still holds the school record in the 10,000 meters with a time of 29:36.8.

In 1975, Simons won his first of four individual California Collegiate Athletic Association track titles in the mile. In 1976, he captured the conference crown in the 5,000 meters and went on to place fourth overall in the NCAA Championships, earning All-America distinction. His best track season came as a senior in 1977 when he captured conference titles in the 5,000 and 10,000 and placed third in the nation in the 10,000 to earn All-America honors. Simons also earned All-America honors in cross country after finishing 15th in the nation at the NCAA Division II championships in 1976.

Simons was named the 1977 Scholar-Athlete award winner and earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration and physical education. For four years thereafter, Simons was the Cal State L.A. men’s cross country and assistant track and field coach.
