In just three seasons, Homer Beatty turned Cal State L.A. into a college division football power. His teams won three straight California Collegiate Athletic Association championships, compiled a 25-2 record and won the Camellia Bowl to clinch the 1965 NCAA West Coast College Division football championship after being named the No. 1 team in the country by UPI in 1965.
Nine of his players won Little All-America honors, and six went on to play in the National Football League.
Beatty was the 1964 Football Digest Coach of the Year and in 22 years of coaching, he compiled a record of 185-36-2 at every level from high school to the semi-pro ranks with the Orange County Ramblers of the Continental Football League.
He also served as Cal State L.A.’s athletic director in 1969 and ’70 when the University moved into the major college ranks as a founding member of the Pacific Coast Athletic Association.
