Cal State LA Athletics

2013: Had a tremendous second season with the Golden Eagles in his final year with the program. Received the department's 2012-13 Frank J. Candida Award as Cal State L.A.'s top male athlete.Appeared in 56 games and started all of them. Hit .311 with 65 hits in 209 at bats. Had 13 home runs, 18 doubles, 61 runs scored and 48 runs batted in. Led the team in runs scored and home runs and was third in RBI. Also contributed on the mound and made seven appearances with one big start. Went 2-1 with a 4.50 earned run average. Was named the California Collegiate Athletic Association Most Valuable Player. Earned first-team All-West Region honors from Daktronics and the American Baseball Coaches Association and second-team All-West Region honors from the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. Earned first-team All-CCAA honors and was named to the CCAA All-Tournament Team. Went 2-for-3 with two home runs, three walks, four runs and four RBI in a 14-2 win over Cal State San Bernardino on March 30. Hit a solo home run in the first inning and a three-run home run in the third. Hit a pair of two-run home runs at Chico State on May 4. Had 20 multi-hit games. Started on the mound for the Golden Eagles in the CCAA Tournament championship game and pitched a season-long four innings in a 7-1 win over Sonoma State on May 12. Allowed only two hits and did not allow a run. For his career, appeared in 101 games with 101 starts. Hit .308 with 115 hits in 373 at bats. Had 21 home runs, 28 doubles, 95 runs scored and 90 RBI. On the mound, had a 2-1 record with a 4.50 earned run average in nine appearances. Had five walks and 10 strikeouts in 14 innings pitched.

2012: Had an outstanding first season with the Golden Eagles and was second on the team with eight home runs and 32 RBI. Hit .305 for the season and scored 34 runs, which was also second on the team. Also pitched in two games and allowed one earned run in two innings of relief. Had a season-high three hits and four RBI in a win over Chico State on March 31. Also had three hits and three RBI at UC San Diego on April 27 and three hits and two RBI at San Francisco State on March 2. Had 10 multi-hit games and hit safely in 35 of 45 games.

At L.A. Pierce College: Earned first-team All-Western State Conference honors in 2011. Also earned first-team All-Conference and first-team All-State honors in 2009 when he hit .361 with 16 home runs and 50 RBI. Had a slugging percentage of .741. Also earned a Western State Conference Gold Glove Award.|

At Chatsworth High School: Was a three-year varsity starter and was part of back-to-back L.A. City championship teams in 2007-08. Was Co-Player of the Year in the West Valley League and earned first-team All-City honors as a senior. Earned second-team All-West Valley League and second-team All-City honors as a junior. Was the 2007 CBCA North-South Series South Most Valuable Player.

Personal: Son of Patrick and Fiona Wharton. Majoring in Kinesiology. Enjoys the beach, movies and music. Lists the back-to-back city championships as his most exciting experiences in sports. Was named to the All-Texas Collegiate League Team this past summer. Has a sister, Brittany and a brother, Shaun.
