Cal State LA Athletics

2013: Was a valuable member of the team for the Golden Eagles in his final year with the program. Was an outstanding defensive catcher for the Golden Eagles. Appeared in 10 games with four starts. Was 0-15 at the plate with one run batted in. Had a sacrifice fly in a 9-2 win over San Francisco State on Feb. 16. Had a stolen base in a 16-11 win over California Baptist on Feb. 4. Had a .967 fielding percentage with only one error in 30 chances. For his career, appeared in 22 games with nine starts. Hit .216 with eight hits in 37 at bats. Scored two runs and had five RBI.

2012: Did not compete in any games for the Golden Eagles and was a red-shirt. Earned a CCAA All-Academic Award.
 
2011: Appeared in 12 games and started five times for the Golden Eagles as a freshman. Hit .364 with eight hits in 22 at bats. Drove in four runs and scored two. Went 3-for-5 with one run scored and two runs batted in against Cal State Dominguez Hills on April 22. Also had two hits with a run scored and one RBI against Cal Poly Pomona on May 7.
 
At San Pedro High School: Competed in baseball and football. Earned All-League honors as a catcher from 2008-10. Was the team’s Most Inspirational Player from 2008-10 and was the team’s Most Valuable Player in 2010. Earned All-City honors in 2010. Had the team’s highest GPA in 2010. Made the varsity team as a freshman. Hit .400 in 2008. The 2010 San Pedro HS baseball team went 25-6 and advanced to the L.A. City championship game.
 
Personal: Son of Heriberto and Ivette Matienzo. Majoring in biochemistry. Enjoys lifting weights, the beach and practicing. Lists hitting  go-ahead three-run home run in the semi-finals of the L.A. City playoffs and helping the team reach the championship game as his most exciting experience in sports.
