Cal State LA Athletics

2024: Had another strong season for the Golden Eagles in his second year with the program. Appeared in 16 games, all in relief, and was second on the team with four saves. Went 1-1 with an 8.34 earned run average. Walked 17 and struck out 22 in 22 2/3 innings pitched. Allowed one hit and no runs with three strikeouts over the final two innings of a 4-3 win over Hawaii-Hilo on Feb. 2. Got the final out with the bases loaded to preserve a 15-11 win at Cal State San Marcos on Feb. 23 for his second save. Picked up his third save with a scoreless inning to lock up a 10-9 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills on March 9. Got the final five outs with no hits or runs allowed to save a 6-3 win over Cal State East Bay on April 6. Picked up the first win of his Cal State LA career by tossing 2 2/3 scoreless innings in a 12-8 win at San Francisco State on April 28. Pitched a season-high four scoreless innings with only one hit allowed against Cal State Monterey Bay on March 30. Had eight scoreless outings in 16 appearances.

2023: Was a big part of the Golden Eagles’ pitching staff in his first year with the program. Had an 0-6 record with a 5.28 earned run average in 30 2/3 innings. Started the season as the team’s closer and led the team with three saves. Was moved to the starting rotation and made five starts. Made his Cal State LA debut and pitched a scoreless inning against The Master’s on Feb. 3. Picked up his first save in a 6-5 win over Cal State San Marcos on March 18. Recorded his second save after 1 2/3 scoreless innings with three strikeouts in a 4-2 win at Stanislaus State on March 25. Got his third straight save after pitching the final inning of a 6-4 win over San Francisco State on April 1. Was then moved into the starting rotation for his final five appearances. Pitched a season-high five innings at Cal State East Bay on April 22 and allowed five hits and two runs and also pitched five innings while allowing three earned runs against Cal State Monterey Bay on April 29.

At Fullerton College: Was on the school’s Dean List. Earned second-team All-Orange Empire Conference honors. Appeared in five games with three starts in 2021. Had 20 strikeouts in 14 2/3 innings.

At Gahr High School: Graduated with honors and was a four-year letterwinner.

Personal: Son of Manuel and Mayra Diaz. Majoring in exercise science. Enjoys cooking, lifting, and running. Lists closing out Cal State LA’s first win in 2024 as his most exciting experience in sports. Notes he wants to become an athletic trainer or physical therapist.
