Biography

2024: Contributed to the Golden Eagles’ bullpen in his final year with the program. Appeared in five games, all in relief. Pitched a total of five innings. Had a 1-0 record with a 7.20 earned run average. Picked up the first win of his Cal State LA career in a 4-3 victory over Hawaii-Hilo on Feb. 2. Didn’t allow an earned run over two innings of relief. Pitched a scoreless inning of relief in a win over La Sierra on Feb. 17. Scattered two hits in a scoreless inning against Stanislaus State in his final appearance on May 4. For his career, appeared in 20 appearances, all in relief, and pitched a total of 23 1/3 innings. Had a 1-2 record and an 8.49 earned run average. Walked 20 and struck out 12. Earned California Collegiate Athletic Association 2024 Spring Honor Roll recognition and a 2023-24 D2 Athletic Directors Association Academic Achievement Award.
2023: Was a major part of the Golden Eagles’ bullpen in his first year with the program. Was second on the team with 15 appearances, all in relief. Had an 0-2 record with a 8.84 earned run average. Made his Cal State LA debut and pitched 1 2/3 innings against Montana State-Billings on Feb. 7. Retired the only two batters he faced to complete a shutout win over Colorado School of Mines on Feb. 18. Didn’t allow an earned run in nine outings during the season. Pitched a season-long 2 2/3 scoreless innings at Chico State on May 5. Earned a 2022-23 D2 Athletic Directors Association Academic Achievement Award and received 2023 CCAA Spring Honor Roll recognition.

At Chico State: Made one relief appearance for the Wildcats. Earned two CCAA All-Academic awards and also received a D2 Athletic Directors Association Academic Achievement Award.

At East Los Angeles College: Earned first-team All-South Coast Conference North honors after pitching for two seasons with the Huskies. Saw playing time as an infielder and pitcher.

At Mark Keppel High School: Earned first-team All-Almont League honors in 2017 and was the league’s Pitcher of the Year. Also earned second-team honors in 2015 and 2016. Earned second-team Pasadena Star-News All-Area honors.

Personal: Son of Mitchell Maki and Cayleen Nakamura. Earned his bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology at Chico State and is pursuing his Master’s degree at Cal State LA. Enjoys lifting weights and hanging out with friends and family. Lists throwing a complete-game shutout during his second year at East Los Angeles College as his most exciting experience in sports. Notes he has a twin sister, Lane.
