Golden Eagles Endure A Long Day At The Ballpark

ST. GEORGE, UTAH -- Cal State LA's baseball team has had to endure a long day at the ballpark at Dixie State on Saturday - and that was before a second game against a different opponent.

The Golden Eagles dropped a marathon 17-15 decision to Dixie State to start the day in a game that took more than four-and-a-half hours and then had to return to face No. 12 Colorado Mesa in a nightcap later Saturday. The Golden Eagles fell behind early and a late rally came up short in a 15-10 loss.

Cal State LA (0-3) had a nine-run third inning in the loss to the Trailblazers, but the hosts put up back-to-back four-run innings in the fifth and sixth to rally from behind. The two teams combined for 32 runs and 30 hits in the contest. The Golden Eagles also committed five errors.

Tyler Odekirk went 4-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBI, while Jesus Mercado went 3-for-3 with two runs and one RBI. Spencer Sundahl had 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Anthony Moreno and Noe Garcia each drove in two runs.

Austin Nazabal allowed six runs over the first three innings and Nick Moisant allowed seven earned runs over the next two innings and took the loss. Jackson Bond gave up one earned run over the next 1 1/3 innings and Micah Hee didn't allow a run over 1 2/3 innings.

The Golden Eagles scored first on a sacrifice fly by Michael Tillman in the first inning, but trailed 5-1 entering an amazing top of the third. Cal State LA had five doubles in the inning and erupted for nine runs to take a 10-5 lead. Moreno had a two-run double to make it 5-3 and Garcia tied it at 5-5 with a two-run double. Odekirk followed with another two-run double to make it 7-5 and Jordan Peabody and Sundahl delivered run-scoring doubles to make it 9-5. Mercado's sacrifice fly accounted for the final run of the inning.

A run-scoring single by Odekirk in the fourth inning gave the Golden Eagles an 11-6 lead, but the Trailblazers scored twice in the fourth and four times in the fifth to take a 12-11 lead. Alam scored on a wild pitch in the fifth to tie it at 12-12, but Dixie State scored four times in the bottom of the inning to take the lead for good.

Cal State LA scored three times in the seventh to pull to within one run. Odekirk and Sundahl both scored on wild pitches and Adam Gordon drew a bases-loaded walk to force in a run and make it 16-15. Dixie State tacked on another run in the bottom of the inning to complete the scoring.

Against Colorado Mesa, the Golden Eagles trailed 12-1 after five innings, but made things interesting with nine runs scored over the final three innings. The two teams combined for 25 runs, 25 hits and seven errors, five by the Golden Eagles.

Sundahl had another good game at the plate and went 3-for-5 with one run and four RBI, while Gordon was 2-for-4 with three runs scored. Peabody was 2-for-3 and Nic Sandoval was 1-for-1 with two runs scored and two RBI.

Angel Lerma got the start for the Golden Eagles and allowed five earned runs over three innings. Brent Jacques went the next 2 2/3 innings and gave up five runs and Matt Miao allowed one earned run over the next 1 2/3 innings. Julien Garcia pitched a scoreless eighth inning for the Golden Eagles.

The Golden Eagles got their first run in the fifth when Gordon doubled, took third on a single by Peabody and scored on a wild pitch.

Cal State LA struck for three runs in the seventh on a run-scoring double by Sundahl and a pair of wild pitches that scored Sandoval and Sundahl. Sundahl had a run-scoring single in the eighth before a big five-run rally in the ninth.

In that inning, Gordon had a run-scoring single, Sandoval doubled in a pair of runs and Sundahl delivered a two-run double.

Cal State LA will complete its trip to Utah with a single game on Sunday against Colorado Mesa at 10 a.m. (PST).
