Biography

2011: Had another strong season at third base for the Golden Eagles in his final year with the program. Appeared in 49 games and started 48 times. Hit .194 with 35 hits in 180 at bats. Had 10 doubles, 17 runs and 19 runs batted in. Had another strong defensive season, making only 12 errors in 147 chances for a .918 fielding percentage. Went 1-for-3 with two runs scored and a season-high three RBI against Cal Poly Pomona on Feb. 5. Went 1-for-5 with two RBI in a win over Cal State East Bay on March 5. Was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to win the game. Had five multi-hit games and drove in two or more runs five times. Picked up the athletic department’s Academic Achievement Award (male) for 2010-11, winning the award for a second straight year. For his career, appeared in 174 games and started 169 times. Hit .255 with 166 hits in 650 at bats. Had 32 doubles, five triples, 114 runs and 77 RBI.

2010: Had a third outstanding season for the Golden Eagles and competed for the team despite a significant injury to his wrist. Appeared in 46 games and started 45 times. Hit .295 with 56 hits in 190 at bats. Scored 27 runs and drove in 27. Was third on the team in RBI. Hit safely in 16 of the last 18 games of the season. Had a career-high four hits at San Francisco State on March 7. Drove in a season-high three runs in games against Chico State on April 10 and April 11. Had 17 multi-hit games and hit safely in 36 of 45 starts. Also chipped in on the mound and tossed a scoreless inning against Sonoma State on April 24. Made only nine errors in 133 chances and had a .932 fielding percentage. Picked up the athletic department’s Academic Achievement Award (male) for 2009-10. Earned a CCAA All-Academic Award for a third straight year.

2009: Had a second strong season for the Golden Eagles. Started at third base for the second straight season. Appeared in 44 games and started 42 times. Hit .273 with 39 hits in 143 at bats. Scored 34 runs and drove in 20. Hit safely in 13 of his last 17 games with nine multi-hit performances that helped raise his batting average from .195 to .273. Was fifth on the team in runs scored for the second straight year. Made only 10 errors in 140 chances. Collected three hits and drove in a career-high four runs in a 9-7 win over Cal Poly Pomona on Feb. 11. Also had three-hit games at UC San Diego on Feb. 27 and at Cal Poly Pomona on April 25. Named Cal State L.A.'s Exceptional Student-Athlete of the Year (male) for 2008-09 and picked up a CCAA All-Academic Award.

2008: Had a productive first season with the Golden Eagles. After missing nearly a month with a finger injury, returned to lock down the starting third baseman’s job. Appeared in 35 games and started 34 times. Had 36 hits in 137 at bats and scored 36 runs. Was fifth on the team in runs scored. Made only nine errors in 101 fielding chances. Had a season-high three hits in game against Cal State Dominguez Hills on March 22. Scored a season-high three runs in games at Cal Poly Pomona on April 24 and at San Francisco State on May 3. Had 11 multi-hit games. Was a perfect 5-of-5 on stolen bases. Earned a CCAA All-Academic Award.

At Valencia High School: Earned second-team All-League honors as a junior and senior. Was the Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year at Valencia in 2006-07 and was on the school’s Honor Roll all four years. Also earned Defensive Player of the Year honors twice.

Personal: Son of Mike and Lori Matzner. Majoring in urban learning. Enjoys the beach, hanging out with friends and working. Lists competing in the CCAA Championship Tournament in 2009 in Palm Springs as his most exciting experiences in sports. Is the SAAC vice-president at Cal State L.A.
