2019 Cal State LA Women's Track and Field – Season Summary
LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's track and field program got a big boost from a sophomore newcomer and fantastic finishes from a pair of seniors to highlight an entertaining 2019 season.
Valexsia Droughn burst onto the scene and won the California Collegiate Athletic Association championship in the 100 meters as well earning All-America recognition in both indoor and outdoor track and field.
J'Liyah Miles added to her amazing career totals in her final season with the program with another conference championship in the long jump, while hurdler
Janeth Moya posted the best mark of her career in the conference meet to qualify for the NCAA Division II Championships.
Droughn finished fifth in the nation in the 100 to earn first-team All-America honors, while Miles was 12
th overall in the 100 to earn second-team honors.
Droughn won the CCAA title in the 100, took fourth in the 200 and teamed with
J'Liyah Miles,
Jayla Miles and
Ryan Greene to finish second in the 4x100 relay. She was named the CCAA Newcomer of the Meet.
Miles, meanwhile, won her third conference long jump championship and her fourth CCAA title overall. She also finished second in the 100 and completed her Cal State LA career with four CCAA titles, four All-America awards, 15 All-West Region awards and 10 All-CCAA honors.
Cal State LA finished sixth in the CCAA championships, led by the points from Droughn and Miles. The Golden Eagles also got a big third-place finish from Moya in the 400 hurdles. The senior broke her personal record in the finals and qualified for the NCAA Championships with a mark of 59.98. That mark moved her into Cal State LA's all-time list in that event at No. 5.
Droughn moved into the top-10 in the 100 at No. 8 and Miles concluded her career at Cal State LA at No. 9.
Cal State LA also performed well in indoor track and field and Droughn earned second-team All-America honors in the 60 after a 10
th-place finish overall. Droughn also earned All-West Region honors in the 60, while Miles earned All-West Region honors in the 60 and long jump.
Droughn's best time of 7.47 in the 60 places her No. 4 all-time, while her best time of 25.38 in the 200 puts her at No. 5. Moya is now No. 8 in the 400 after a time of 58.70, freshman
Jayla Miles is No. 4 after her best time of 8.94 in the 60 hurdles.
Mya Ferguson is No. 6 in the 60 hurdles with a time of 9.15 and Moya is No. 8 after a best time of 9.30. The 4x400 relay team of
Damaris Hamilton, Moya,
Dericka Braden and
Rebecca Harris is 10
th after posting a time of 4:03.02.
Hamilton is No. 6 all-time in the indoor triple jump with a best mark of 37-11.50 and
Javany McDermott is No. 8 after a mark of 37-1.75.
