Gordon's Career Day Helps Secure A Milestone Win

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LA JOLLA -- Cal State LA's Adam Gordon had a career day on Saturday that led to a milestone victory for head coach Vince Beringhele.

Gordon slugged three home runs and drove in four runs to lead the Golden Eagles to a 10-7 win over No. 1 UC San Diego in the opener of a California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader at Triton Baseball Field. The win was the 300th for Beringhele as Cal State LA's head coach.

Gordon hit a fourth home run in the nightcap to help the Golden Eagles take a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the seventh, but the Tritons tied the game on a fielder's choice and then won it on a two-out, walk-off grand slam, 7-3.

Cal State LA (18-23, 17-20) remains in contention for a spot in the CCAA Tournament spot after an impressive series split against the top-ranked team in the nation. UC San Diego (28-9, 23-9 CCAA) entered the series with a 70-game streak of now allowing 10 runs or more in a contest, but the Golden Eagles were able to reach double figures in two of the four games.

They did it for a second time in Saturday's opener, thanks in large part to Gordon, who entered the doubleheader with four home runs and matched it in the two games in La Jolla. Three players in CCAA history have hit four homers in a game, including Cal State LA's Jay Caligiuri in 2001, and Gordon is now part of those in a logjam for fourth in conference history with three.

He now leads the team with eight home runs and 38 RBI.

Gordon was 4-for-5 with four runs scored and four RBI in the opener.

Cal State LA hit five home runs in the opener. Spencer Sundahl and Aaron McCann also went deep against the second-best pitching staff by earned run average entering the series.

Dylan Suppan went a season-long six innings to pick up the win for the Golden Eagles. He allowed nine hits and five runs. Johnny Virgin pitched a scoreless seventh inning and, after running into some trouble in the eighth, Alec Daily came on to get the final two outs. Zachary Grande allowed one run in the ninth inning and got the final two outs with the potential tying run at the plate.

Gordon hit his first home run, a solo shot in the fourth inning, to cut a 2-0 deficit in half. His second home run, also a solo shot, tied things at 2-2 in the sixth and he hit a two-run home run in the top of the ninth to stretch Cal State LA's lead to 10-6.

Sundahl hit a two-run home run as part of a four-run sixth inning that gave the Golden Eagles a 5-2 lead. McCann added a solo shot in the eighth inning to put the Golden Eagles ahead, 8-6.

Jordan Peabody had a run-scoring single in the sixth and a sacrifice fly in the seventh.

The Golden Eagles trailed, 2-0, in the nightcap when Gordon struck again, smacking a solo shot in the sixth inning to make it 2-1.

Cal State LA scored twice in the top of the seventh to take the lead. Anthony Moreno singled and was replaced by pinch runner Nick Penzetta. Tyler Odekirk reached on an infield single and both runners advanced on a throwing error. Nic Sandoval's groundout tied the game at 2-2 and, after Gordon was intentionally walked, Nate Alam singled to give the Golden Eagles the lead.

Micah Hee went 6 1/3 strong innings for the Golden Eagles and helped put his team on the brink of a sweep.

Beringhele is in his 12th season with the Golden Eagles and memorably guided the team to a powerful performance in the 2013 CCAA Championship Tournament while winning the title and earning a bid to the NCAA playoffs. Cal State LA has reached the conference tourney in each of the past three years and will need a strong finish next week to make it three in a row.

Cal State LA will host Cal State East Bay in the opener of a four-game series next Friday at 6 p.m. at Reeder Field.
