LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's baseball team put in some extra work Friday to secure a California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader sweep over Cal State Dominguez Hills.
The Golden Eagles took the opener, 10-9, in 12 innings when
Nathan Navarrete raced home from third base on a passed ball and then took the seven-inning nightcap, 16-7. Cal State LA (12-5, 5-2 CCAA) collected 31 hits in the doubleheader, while Cal State Dominguez Hills (2-14, 0-7 CCAA) had 26.
Cal State LA held leads of 8-2 in both games and had to hold on dearly for the wins. In the opener, the Golden Eagles surrendered six runs in the seventh inning and, after retaking the lead with a run in the bottom of the seventh, gave up the tying run in the ninth. The game stayed deadlocked at 9-9 until the bottom of the 12th when, with runners on second and third and two out, Navarrete alertly scampered home for the winning run on a passed ball.
In the nightcap, Cal State LA led 8-0 after three innings and 8-2 after four innings, but the Toros scored four times in the fifth to make it 8-6. The Toros still trailed by just two runs, 9-7, heading to the bottom of the sixth, but Cal State LA put the game out of reach by scoring seven times.
Navarrete had six hits in the doubleheader, three in each game, while
Christian Broussard, Jr., had five hits and four RBI.
Sean Watkins homered for the fourth straight game in the opener with a three-run shot in the first inning.
Saxon Andross pitched six strong innings for the Golden Eagles, allowing only two runs before the Toros erupted in the seventh. He gave nine hits and six earned runs.
George Alamillo allowed three hits and one run over the next 1 1/3 innings, while
Gabriel Gentner allowed one hit and one run while walking three and striking out three over 2 2/3 innings.
Rob Stowell got two outs in the 11th and
Ryan Dixon blanked the Toros over the final 1 1/3 innings and got the win.
John Soteropulos went 2-for-5 with a three-run home run for the Toros, wihle Esteban Oretega was 4-for-5 with one run scored and two RBI.
Watkins staked the Golden Eagles to a 3-0 lead in the first with his fourth home run of the season and
Drew Seelman and Broussard each drove in runs to make it 5-1 in the second. Navarrete had a two-run single in a three-run third for the Golden Eagles to make it 8-2.
Soterpulos hit a three-run home run to cap off the six-run rally in the seventh for the Toros, but Nick Alexander singled in a run to give the Golden Eagles a 9-8 lead in the bottom of the inning. The Golden Eagles threw out two Cal State Dominguez Hills baserunners in the eighth, before Ortega drove in the tying run with a fielder's choice in the ninth.
Navarrete picked up a one-out single in the 12th and took second on a single by
Angel Sanchez. He took third on a groundout before scoring the winning run on the passed ball.
James Mendez pitched four strong innings, allowing six hits and two runs in the nightcap and left with an 8-2 lead.
Austin Nazabal got the final two outs in the fifth inning after the Toros had cut the lead to 8-6 and picked up the win.
Rob Stowell surrendered an unearned run in the sixth and
Daniel Ferrell got the final five outs to record his first save.
Navarrete was 3-for-5,
Isaac Dominguez drove in three runs, Broussard was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI and Sanchez was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI. Seelman was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and one RBI. He scored four runs in the doubleheader.
Cal State LA will conclude the series with a single game at Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
