CARSON -- Cal State LA's baseball team enjoyed another big offensive day to complete a California Collegiate Athletic Association sweep over crosstown rival Cal State Dominguez Hills.
The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 10-0 lead after four at bats and held on for a 14-9 win over the Toros Saturday afternoon at Toro Field. Cal State LA (13-5, 6-2 CCAA) scored 10 or more runs in all four games of the series. Cal State Dominguez Hills (2-15, 0-8 CCAA) got as close as 12-6, but couldn't overcome the early deficit.
Christian Broussard went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBI, while
Andrew Hermanson was 3-for-6 with two runs scored and three RBI and
Nathan Navarrete was 3-for-5 with one run scored and one RBI.
Angel Sanchez was 2-for-5 with one run and two RBI and
Tommy Pincin drove in a pair of runs and scored once.
Miguel Castaneda went 3-for-5 with four RBI for the Toros, while Benjamin Donerson was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI. Brandon Polizzi was 3-for-5 with two runs scored.
Garrett Dean reached base safely four times and scored three runs for the Golden Eagles, while
Isaac Dominguez had a pair of hits, scored once and drove in one.
Greg Humbert, in his second appearance after missing all of last season, tossed three scoreless innings to get the Golden Eagles off to a good start.
Justin Davis worked the next 3 1/3 innings and picked up the win, while
Nate Adams allowed only one run over the final 2 2/3 innings to finish things up.
Dean and Hermanson picked up run-scoring singles in the third to give the Golden Eagles a 2-0 lead. Cal State LA exploded for eight runs in the fourth to take a 10-0 lead. Navarrete drew a bases-loaded walk to force in the first run of the inning and Dominguez singled in a run to make it 4-0. Broussard delivered a two-run single and later scored to make it 7-0. Pincin contributed a two-run triple and then scored on a wild pitch to make it 10-0.
Cal State Dominguez Hills got two runs in its half of the fourth, but Cal State LA restored a 10-run advantage with a two-run double by Hermanson.
Sanchez had a two-run single in the seventh to complete Cal State LA's scoring.
Cal State LA will open a four-game series against Cal Poly Pomona with single games in Pomona on Thursday and Friday. The series will conclude with a doubleheader on Saturday at Reeder Field beginning at 1 p.m.
