Golden Eagles Drop Two Games At Dixie State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ST. GEORGE, UT - Cal State L.A.'s baseball team was unable to shake its current slump Friday at Dixie State College.

The Golden Eagles saw their losing streak stretch to 10 games after losing both ends of a doubleheader to the Red Storm, 17-9 and 7-0,  at Bruce Hurst Stadium. Both games were nine-inning contests.

Cal State L.A. led early in the opening game, 4-1, after three innings. The Red Storm, though, scored 10 runs in the fourth inning and five more in the fifth to break the game open. After collecting nine runs and 12 hits in the opener, the Golden Eagles were limited to just three hits in the nightcap by Dixie State pitcher John Conquy.

Cody Doyle was 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI in the opener, while Steven Luna drove in a pair of runs. Manny Acosta, Matt Sanchez and Jesus Cuevas had two hits each in the opener.

The Golden Eagles (14-25) got hits from Casey Ryan, David Trejo and Cuevas in the nightcap.

Ryan Santhon started the opener for the Golden Eagles and limited the Red Storm (28-13) to one run over the first three innings before running into big trouble in the fourth. He gave up five hits and eight runs in 3 1/3 innings. Chris Oropesa gave up two hits and three runs while finishing up the fourth inning and Travis Hawley gave up 10 hits and six runs over the final four innings.

The Golden Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Acosta led off with a single, took second on a sacrifice by Ryan and later scored on a single by Luna.

After Dixie State tied it in the second, the Golden Eagles regained the lead in the third. Luna drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, Trejo singled in a run and Cuevas had a run-scoring double.

Dixie State, though, erased the 4-1 deficit with its 10-run fourth inning that was highlighted by a three-run double by Drew McLaughlin and a grand slam home run by Kris Kaplan.

The Golden Eagles scored twice in the sixth on a run-scoring fielder's choice by Geoff Schuller and when Andrew Montanari scored later on an error.

Cal State L.A. concluded its scoring with a three-run eighth inning that was highighted by a two-run single by Doyle.

Greg Humbert started in the nightcap and allowed nine hits and six earned runs in five innings. David Armas, Adan Cabrales and Omar Jimenez tossed scoreless innings of relief.

Cal State L.A. will conclude the three-game series with a single-game against Dixie State on Saturday.
