Box Score AZUSA -- Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team got some clutch performances on Thursday night to advance in the NCAA Division II West Regional Tournament.
The Golden Eagles were taken into penalty kicks after a UC San Diego penalty kick late in regulation, but
Miguel Galvan Lara connected in the seventh round of the match-deciding penalty kicks after goalkeeper
Mike Beigarten made his second straight huge save to lift the Golden Eagles into the second round. The game goes down as a 1-1 tie with the Golden Eagles advancing on penalty kicks, 5-4.
Cal State L.A. (13-3-2) advances to the second round of the NCAA playoffs for a fourth straight year. The Golden Eagles, the No. 3 seeds, will take on No. 2 seed and host Azusa Pacific on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m.
"We are proud of our group," Cal State L.A. Head Coach
Chris Chamides said. "This is a typical CCAA match-up. Full credit goes to UC San Diego -- that's a hard-working, classy group. In the end, this game could have gone either way. The goalkeeper did a good job and in the end, things just fell our way."
The Golden Eagles had the edge in shots (18-9), shots on goal (7-5) and corner kicks (7-4), but couldn't shake the Tritons (10-4-6).
Cal State L.A. took a 1-0 lead in the 76th minute when
Shane Panther scored his second goal of the season with an assist from
Joshua Cortez. Panther accepted a pass from Cortez about 10 yards from the goal and found the back of the net.Â
UC San Diego, though, got the equalizer in the 87th minute when Brandon Bauman scored on a penalty kick following a hand ball in the box.
Both teams had chances earlier to score.
Abel Teferi had a point-blank shot from the top of the box saved by UC San Diego goalkeeper Cameron McElfresh. UC San Diego countered with a strong chance from Sam Palano, but his blast was saved by Beigarten. Palano later had another chance in the 35th minute, but Beigarten came out of the goalmouth and defended the play successfully.
Andre Bissmark had a golden opportunity with two minutes left in the first half, but his shot beat the goalkeeper, but hit the far post and stayed out. Galvan Lara had a strong bid in the 61st minute saved by a diving McElfresh and Marvin Iskra had a good chance with just over 15 minutes left, but his shot from 15 yards out was deflected just enough to go high over the crossbar.
Panther broke the scoreless tie with his goal, only to see UC San Diego tie it late.
In the shootout,
Halil Tozar,
Sigifredo Torres,
Herbert Biste and
Kaan Gultoprak were successful in the first four rounds. After a pair of misses, Galvan Lara connected after a second straight save by Beigarten to send the Golden Eagles on to Saturday's second round.
