Summary

Biography

2015: Had an outstanding season in his fourth and final year with the program. Appeared in 20 games and started 18 times. Played a total of 1,508 minutes. Had a career-high five goals and one assist for 11 points. Was fourth on the team in scoring. Earned second-team All-West Region honors from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and second-team All-California Collegiate Athletic Association honors. Scored both goals in a 2-0 win over Humboldt State on Sept. 20. Also had the game-winning goal in the 58th minute of a 1-0 win over Cal State San Marcos on Oct. 2. Had the lone goal in a 1-1 tie at Chico State on Oct. 11 and a goal in a 3-2 win at Cal State East Bay on Oct. 31. Had an assist on a goal by Herbert Biste in a 2-1 win at Stanislaus State on Oct. 29. For his career, appeared in 71 games with 26 starts. Played a total of 3,563 minutes. Had six goals and three assists for 15 points.

2014: Continued his steady improvement and was once again a valuable part of a championship team. Appeared in 18 games and started seven times, including the first six games of the season. Played a total of 574 minutes. Had one goal and two assists for four points. Was one of the team’s top midfielders. Scored his first career goal, a game-winner, early in the second half of a 4-1 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills on Sept. 20. Also had assists in wins over Saint Martin’s on Sept. 6 and UC San Diego in an NCAA playoff game on Nov. 13. Assisted on Shane Panther’s goal in the 76th minute that staked Cal State L.A. to a 1-0 lead.

2013: Showed great improvement in his second year with the program. Appeared in all 21 games and was a key reserve as a midfielder. Made his first career start in a 1-1 tie at Cal State Monterey Bay on Sept. 22. Was ninth on the team in minutes played with 1,006.

2012: Made significant contributions in his first year with the Golden Eagles. Appeared in a total of 12 games and helped fortify the midfield. Played a season-high 78 minutes in a 2-2 tie at San Francisco State on Oct. 26.

At Pioneer Valley High School: Was a four-year varsity player.

Personal: Son of Narciso and Ana Cortez. Majoring in Kinesiology. Enjoys surfing, golf and playing fifa. Lists winning the CCAA championship in 2013 and the NCAA West Region championship in 2014 as his most exciting experience in sports.
