LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s baseball team used some clutch pitching and timely hitting to post a tight sweep of a California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader on Saturday.
The Golden Eagles got out of a ninth-inning jam to prevail in the opener, 10-6, over Cal State Stanislaus and then got a seven-inning complete game from
Gabriel Asakura to win the nightcap, 3-2. Cal State L.A. (7-2, 3-0 CCAA) got a two-run home run from
James Wharton to erase a 2-0 deficit in the nightcap.
Cal State L.A. got a solid start from
David Arredondo in the opener. He went five strong innings before tiring a bit in the sixth and turning it over to the Golden Eagle bullpen.
Nick Rodarte got out of a jam in the sixth inning and pitched two more scoreless innings and
Jacob Valenzuela got a game-ending double play from the only batter he faced in the ninth to end it.
David Compton hit a home run and had three RBI in the opener, while
Daniel Duran had four hits and
Jesus Cuevas had three hits. Compton's three-run home run in the third gave the Golden Eagles a 7-3 lead. The Warriors closed to within 7-6, but the Golden Eagles got one in the seventh and two in the eighth to prevail.
Cal State Stanislaus (1-4, 0-3 CCAA) got a solid start from Rafael Vasquez, who rebounded nicely after allowing seven runs, only four of them earned, in the first three innings. Vasquez tossed three scoreless innings to end his stint and give the Warriors a chance to rally.
The Warriors collected 12 hits in the opener, including two each from Justin Manci, Colton Beatty and DJ Arellano. Andy Yingling drove in a pair of runs.
The nightcap was a brilliant pitching duel between Asakura and Cal State Stanislaus' Shay Maltese. The Warriors scored an unearned run in the first inning on a passed ball and took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning on a solo home run by Eli Davis.
Cal State L.A., though, took advantage of a missed pop-up to start the bottom of the fourth inning. Duran ended up on second and promptly scored when Wharton crushed a two-run home run to center.
Cliff Quick was hit by a pitch, took second on a wild pitch and advanced to third on a single by
Manny Acosta. With runners on first and third,
Brian Compton dropped down a squeeze bunt and Quick was safe at the plate for the go-ahead run.
Asakura took it from there, setting the Warriors down on just one hit over the final three innings. He gave up three hits and one earned run while walking one and striking out eight.
Maltese gave up seven hits and two earned runs in his six innings and struck out eight.
Cal State L.A. will conclude the four-game conference series with a single game Sunday against Cal State Stanislaus at Reeder Field beginning at 11 a.m.
