Golden Eagles Collect 30 Hits In Big Win Over Biola

LA MIRADA – Cal State L.A.'s baseball team enjoyed an offensive explosion Monday afternoon in a non-conference game at Biola University.
 
The Golden Eagles collected 30 hits and rolled to a 20-6 win over Biola Monday at Eagles Diamond. Cal State L.A. (4-2) scored 11 times in the second inning to break a 4-4 tie and never looked back. Every starter in the lineup had at least two hits and the Golden Eagles' 30 hits were their most since they had 30 in a 26-7 win over Nebraska-Kearney in a 2007 NCAA playoff game.
 
Cal State L.A. had four home runs in the game, including a grand slam by David Compton. Three of the homers came in the second inning when the Golden Eagles sent 15 batters to the plate and had 11 hits.
 
Justin Harr, the second of five Cal State L.A. pitchers, worked three scoreless innings to pick up the victory.
 
Manny Acosta was 4-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. Compton was 2-for-5 and drove in five runs. Daniel Duran was 3-for-4 with four runs scored and a 2-run home run. Peter Straka had four hits and scored three times. Chad Nacapoy had three hits, including a two-run home run and Jeremy Weber had four hits, including a three-run home run. Cliff Quick had two hits and three RBI, while James Wharton and Jesus Cuevas had two hits each.
 
Nick Rodarte worked the first two innings for the Golden Eagles and gave up four first-inning runs before blanking Biola (4-4) in the second. Harr pitched the next three innings, Jacob Valenzuela didn't allow a hit and a scoreless inning and Cedar Morgan allowed only one hit over two innings. Sergio Luna pitched the final inning and gave up one earned run while striking out two.
 
The Golden Eagles struck for four runs in the first. Wharton had a run-scoring double, Quick had a two-run single and Compton drove in a run with a groundout.
 
After Biola scored four times in the bottom of the inning, the Golden Eagles broke the game open in the second. Cuevas doubled home Nacapoy for the go-ahead run. Quick and Acosta singled in runs with the bases loaded and Compton hit his grand slam to give the Golden Eagles an 11-4 lead. Nacapoy followed with a two-run home run to make it 13-4 and Duran hit a two-run home run to extend the lead to 15-4.
 
Weber connected for a three-run home run in the fifth to make it 18-4 and Acosta singled in a run and Jordan Castro hit a sacrifice fly to complete the Golden Eagles' scoring in a two-run sixth.
 
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Friday in its California Collegiate Athletic Association opener against Cal State Stanislaus at Reeder Field.
