LOS ANGELES -- Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team took a little while to get rolling, but there were certainly no complaints at the end of the Golden Eagles' season-opening win Thursday.
The Golden Eagles broke open a tight game with five quick goals in the second half and went on to a 6-0 victory over Saint Martin's Thursday at Jesse Owens Track. Cal State L.A. got a pair of goals from Timo Schwar and played sturdy defense in front of goalkeeper
Jose Martinez.
The Golden Eagles and Saints were locked in a scoreless battle for most of the first half before a goal by
Sergio Cedano in the 41st minute gave Cal State L.A. the lead.
The Golden Eagles then exploded for four goals in a 10-minute span of the second half to take control. Schwar scored twice, while
Derek Faulkner and
Antti Arvola scored once during the flurry and
Aurelio Sanchez, Jr. completed the scoring with a goal in the 84th minute.
Schwar added an assist for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State L.A. enjoyed a 13-1 edge in corner kicks and had a 21-6 advantage in shots. The Golden Eagles only had a 5-3 advantage in the first half, but had a 16-3 shot advantage in the second half.
Martinez made three saves for Cal State L.A. in his first start since the end of the 2009 season. He was not with the program in 2010.
The Golden Eagles got the opening goal late in the first half after Saint Martin's had gotten off to a solid start.
Marvin Sandoval chased down a rebound off the post and sent the ball back toward the goal where Cedano headed it into the upper right shelf.
Schwar made it 2-0 in the 54th minute off a corner kick.
Julian Ringhof headed the corner by Arvola to Schwar, who headed it into the goal.
Cal State L.A. made it 3-0 less than two minutes later when Faulkner rifled a spectacular shot from about 22 yards out into the right-corner of the goal.
The Golden Eagles then scored twice in one minute to make it 5-0. Schwar sent the ball into the goal from a sharp angle for the first score and Arvola took a pass from Schwar and drilled a shot into the upper left corner of the goal for the second.
Sanchez then headed in a corner kick from
Osvaldo Lopez to make it 6-0 in the 84th minute.
Saint Martin's best opportunity to score came in the second half when Xan Barber had a good chance from in close, but Martinez came out to smother the attempt.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Saturday with another home game against Colorado Mesa.
