Golden Eagles Walk Off With A Victory In Home Finale

Box Score

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State L.A.'s baseball team literally walked off with a win in its 2010 home finale against Sonoma State.

The Golden Eagles roared back for six runs in the bottom of the ninth inning and salvaged the final game of a four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association series with an 11-10 win over the Seawolves at Reeder Field. Cal State L.A. (18-28, 16-20 CCAA) snapped a six-game losing streak with the victory and won for just the seventh time at home this season.

The Golden Eagles tied the game when Mario Ramirez was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and two outs in the ninth. Sam Wiley followed with a walk to force in the winning run.

Wiley had gotten the rally going in the ninth inning with a two-run home run. That followed a walk to Ramirez. Cliff Quick singled and stole second and Jordan Castro walked. Max Moya singled to load the bases. Jesus Campos hit a sacrifice fly to make it 10-8. Castro then scored on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to 10-9.

Joe Park reached on an infield single and Matt Miraldi was hit by a pitch to load the bases again. After Chris Matzner struck out for the second out, Ramirez was plunked by a pitch, extending his school record to 20 for the season. Wiley then drew a walk to end the game.

Miraldi, who scored a pair of runs, made the defensive play of the game to help the Golden Eagles styay within striking distance early. Sonoma State jumped out to a 4-1 lead and loaded the bases in the third when Miraldi made a leaping grab in left field to rob a potential grand-slam home run off the bat of Brian Wright.

Cal State L.A. starter Rory Young settled down nicely after that and went seven strong innings, helping out a depleted Golden Eagle pitching staff. Matt Stropoli pitched a scoreless eighth inning, but was touched for four runs in the ninth, extending Sonoma State's lead to 10-5.

Nevertheless, Stropoli picked up the win.

Park was 4-for-5 with three runs scored, while Wiley was 3-for-5 with four RBI. Ramirez was 3-for-5 with three RBI. Every Cal State L.A. starter either picked up a hit or drove in a run.

Wright was 3-for-6 with two runs scored for Sonoma State. Sonoma State got home runs from Ryan Stevens, who hit a two-run homer to highlight a three-run first inning, and Austin Hogans, whose solo shot in the seventh staked the Seawolves to a 6-4 lead.

Cal State L.A. made it 6-5 on a run-scoring single in the bottom of the seventh, but Sonoma State got a two-run single from Garrett Gooselaw, a groundout by Erik Hansen and an infield single by Joey Parigi and to score four times in the top of the ninth.

That gave the Seawolves a 10-5 lead entering the bottom of the ninth before the Golden Eagles staged their game-winning rally.

Cal State L.A. honored its seven seniors -- Miraldi, Ramirez, Wiley, Moya, Campos, Brendan McQuaid and Camron Collard -- in pre-game ceremonies.

Cal State L.A. will conclude its season with a four-game series at Cal State East  Bay beginning on Friday.
