Golden Eagles Start Well At CCAA Championships

SAN MARCOS -- Cal State LA's Kailea Satterwhite was back in a familiar spot Thursday on the opening day of the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championships.

Satterwhite stood at the top of the podium for the second time in her Cal State LA career after winning the conference discus title with a throw of 159-2 at Mangram Track on the campus of Cal State San Marcos. Satterwhite won her first discus championship in 2024 and didn't compete in 2025. She has returned better than ever in 2026 and her best mark of 163-5 is currently No. 12 in the nation.

Her mark of 159-2 on Thursday came on her first throw and pretty much settled the competition. She won the event by more than 10 feet.

Coming into the conference meet, I felt a lot of nerves. It was my first conference championship back after redshirting last season," Satterwhite said. "My goal was to win the discus, not just for myself, but for my daughter. I'm incredibly grateful for the opportunity to compete at the conference level and to walk away with a gold medal. Keeping my faith in God and trusting the path guided me and pushed me to reach higher. Being able to show my daughter what's possible means everything to me."

The Golden Eagles got additional points in the discus from Sinaiah Pointer, who was fifth with a mark of 130-7 that came on her fifth throw.

Cal State LA also got a fourth-place finish in the long jump from Summer Stevenson, who saved her best for last with an 18-6.50 jump on her final attempt to climb five places in the standings. Her mark of 18-6.50 is a season's best.

The Golden Eagles got 19 points thanks to Satterwhite, Stevenson and Pointer and are fourth after the first day.

The women's finals were the highlight on a strong opening day for the Golden Eagles. Cal State LA had several top qualifiers in prelims on Thursday.

For the men, Drew Hill and Wallace Aflamah went 1-2 in the 100 prelims with times of 10.37 and 10.52. Nicholas Aninze had the top qualifying mark in the 400 hurdles with a time of 52.33 and Gabriel Pearson was third at 54.36. Jaylend Howard had the No. 2 qualifying mark in the 400 with a time of 47.50, which is a season's best and an NCAA provisional qualifying mark.

For the women, Dalia Romo had the top qualifying time in the 400 hurdles with a mark of 61.43, while Georgia Gaylor qualified with the No. 7 mark of 65.35, which is her best mark of the season by nearly three seconds.

Emmerson Wiggins qualified in the 400 with a mark of 57.46 that was No. 8 in the field.

The conference championships will continue with the second of three days on Friday.
