LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's and women's track and field teams enjoyed some outstanding championship performances during a successful 2026 season.
Summer Stevenson's national championship in the outdoor triple jump was the biggest prize, but the Golden Eagles also captured six individual championships at the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championships and had 12 All-West Region and four All-America awards in a much improved performance for both teams last season.
Stevenson's performance at the national championships was sensational. She entered the meet with the No. 2 qualifying mark in the nation so a title was definitely an attainable goal. She took the lead after a personal best mark of 42-5.25 on the third of six attempts at the Francis G. Welch Stadium in Emporia, Kansas. She maintained the advantage throughout, but not without a major scare from Mikaela Miles of Embry-Riddle, who came up just one-half inch short of Stevenson's winning mark on her final attempt.
Stevenson captured the 51st national championship in Cal State LA's women's track history - both outdoor and indoor - and she became the first CCAA individual national champion in women's track since 2017.
It was also the first outdoor national championship for Cal State LA in women's outdoor track and field since Calista Lyon won the discus title in 2012, although it was actually the second triple jump championship in three years at Cal State LA after
Jonon Young won the title in indoor track and field in 2024.
Stevenson was joined at the national meet by
Kailea Satterwhite, who threw a personal best of 168-8 to finish a surprising fourth in the discus. She entered the championships with the No. 12 qualifying mark, yet beat her personal best by an amazing five feet to earn first-team All-America status.
Thanks to Stevenson and Satterwhite combining for 15 points, Cal State LA finished in a tie for 15th in the nation, the best national finish since 2005.
Stevenson was named the NCAA West Region Field Athlete of the Year and the CCAA Female Track & Field Athlete of the Year.
She was one of four CCAA champions for the women's team in a spectacular conference meet.
Kailea Satterwhite won her second CCAA title in the discus,
Sinaiah Pointer won her first CCAA title in the shot put and
Dalia Romo won her first CCAA title in the 400 hurdles. Led by their four champions and a second-place finish from
Emmerson Wiggins in the 400, the Golden Eagles placed fourth in the conference meet, moving up one spot from 2025.
For the men,
Wallace Aflamah was a CCAA champion in the 100 meters, edging defending champion
Drew Hill in the final, while
Nicholas Aninze took the other championship for the men in the 400 hurdles. Aflamah was named the CCAA Newcomer of the Meet.
In addition to the two championships, the men's team got three runner-up finishes from Hill in the 100, Tony Espinoza in the 110 hurdles and
Gabriel Pearson in the 400 hurdles and a pair of third-place finishes from
Jaylend Howard in the 400 and the 4x400 relay team of
Charles Chatman, Aninze, Howard and
Jackson Traynham.
The men finished fifth in the conference meet, a jump of two places from the seventh-place finish in 2025. Hill, Aninze and Aflamah all qualified for the NCAA Championsihips with Hill and Aninze earning second-team All-America honors.
