NEW ORLEANS -- Cal State LA's men's and women's track and field teams had seven student-athletes earn All-Region honors from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, the organization announced on Wednesday.
The top-five individuals in each event from the region earned All-Region distinction. In addition, the region's top-three relay teams were honored. Eight regions -- Atlantic, Central, East, Midwest, South, South Central, Southeast and West -- were used for the awards.
Five members from Cal State LA's men's team were honored in a total of six events, while two members from the women's team were honored in three events.
Drew Hill earned three All-Region awards for his marks in the 100 and 200 and as part of the 4x400 relay team.
Nicholas Aninze and
Wallace Aflamah earned two each, Aflamah for the 100 and the 4x400 relay and Aninze for the 400 hurdles and 4x400 relay.
Mekhi Sanchez earned all-region honors in the long jump and
Jalen Kennedy earned honors as part of the 4x400 relay.
Summer Stevenson earned All-Region honors in the long jump and triple jump for the women's team, while
Kailea Satterwhite earned honors in the discus.
Hill, who has qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 100 and 200, now has a total of six All-Region honors in his Cal State LA career. His marks of 10.27 in the 100 and 20.87 and the 4x400 relay team's time of 3:11.07 earned him the awards this year. Last year, he earned All-Region honors in the 100 and 4x100 in outdoor track and the 60 in indoor track.
Aflamah, who was named the Newcomer of the Meet at the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championships, received all-region honors for his time of 10.30 in the 100 and as part of the 4x400 relay.
Aninze, the CCAA champion in the 400 hurdles, earned All-Region honors for his time of 51.18 in the 400 hurdles and as part of the 4x400 relay team.
Kennedy, a freshman, earned an All-Region honor for being a part of the 4x400 relay team. He had a best 400-meter time of 49.53.
Sanchez, a junior newcomer, earned an All-Region honors for his mark of 24-0.75 in the long jump.
For the women, Stevenson, who was named the CCAA Newcomer of the Meet after winning the conference triple jump championship and finishing fourth in the long jump, earned honors in both events after posting best marks of 42-4 in the triple jump and 19-4 in the long jump.
She enters the NCAA Championships with the No. 2 mark in the country in the triple jump.
Satterwhite, who won the CCAA championship in the discus for the second time earned her second All-Region award this year and her first in outdoor track. She was honored for her best mark of 163-5. Previously, she earned All-Region honors in indoor track and field in the weight throw, where she had a best mark of 54-6.
Aflamah, Aninze, Hill, Stevenson and Satterwhite will be competing at the NCAA Championships in Kansas May 21-23.
