Golden Eagles Fall Twice In San Bernardino

SAN BERNARDINO -- Cal State LA's baseball team had a long and frustrating day against host Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday.

The Golden Eagles dropped both ends of a California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader to the Yotes, 10-2 and 12-9 at Fiscalini Field. Cal State LA (15-13, 5-6 CCAA) has lost the first three games of the four-game series to Cal State San Bernardino (12-12, 6-5 CCAA).

Adam Axtell had a home run and five runs batted in for the Golden Eagles in the nightcap, while Alberto Prado had a home run and scored a pair of runs. Cal State LA had 13 hits in the nightcap, but Cal State San Bernardino had eight hits, including a pair of home runs from Dom Dominguez, and took advantage of 10 walks from Golden Eagle pitchers.

Jonathan Manuel started for the Golden Eagles, but struggled with his command and allowed eight walks and four hits over two innings. Jake Spence worked the next three innings for the Golden Eagles and Lino Zepeda finished up.

Ethan Gonzalez had three hits for the Golden Eagles, while Prado, Omar Gonzalez, Manuel and Axtell had two hits each.

Axtell hit a two-run home run in the second inning to pull the Golden Eagles to within 3-2 and he delivered a three-run double in the third to bring the Golden Eagles to within 7-6. Dominguez, though, hit a three-run double in the bottom of the inning to restore the Yotes' four-run lead. Omar Gonzalez doubled in a run and Ethan Gonzalez singled in a run to make it 10-8 and a solo home run by Prado in the sixth pulled Cal State LA to within 11-9.

In the opener, Cal State LA took a 2-0 lead in the first on solo home runs from Prado and Manuel, but the Golden Eagles didn't score again and Cal State San Bernardino scored nine runs in its first four at bats to take control of the game. Ismael Quintero was charged with nine runs over 3 1/3 innings in a tough start and Jacob Badillo allowed only five hits and one run over 4 1/3 innings of relief. Isaac Quintero retired the only batter he faded in the eighth.

Manuel had two hits in the opener for the Golden Eagles.

Cal State LA will complete the series with Cal State San Bernardino with a single game on Sunday beginning at noon.
