Golden Eagles And Toros Split A Lengthy Twinbill

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's baseball team went to the extremes Sunday in a non-conference doubleheader against Cal State Dominguez Hills.

After falling to the Toros in the opener, 21-7, the Golden Eagles turned the tables in a 14-2 victory in the nightcap to earn a split of a four-game series that started with single games in Carson on Friday and Saturday.

Cesar Chavez went 3-for-3 with four runs scored and three RBI in the leadoff spot in the nightcap, while Ben Lee went 2-for-4 with four RBI and Kai Penuelas had two hits, including a three-run home run. Alberto Prado, Kadyn Victorian and Kai Butler also had two hits each to spark a 15-hit attack.

Jonathan Manuel allowed just three hits and two runs over 4 2/3 innings to pick up the win, while Jared Robles allowed only one hit over the final 2 1/3 innings.

Cal State LA (7-6) jumped out to a 10-2 lead after three innings.

It was a completely different story in the opener as Cal State Dominguez Hills (7-5) took an 11-1 lead after six innings and tacked on five runs in both the seventh and eighth innings to reach 21. Tristan Usher went 3-for-4 with a pair of home runs and seven RBI, while Nigel Buckley also homered and scored five runs. The Toros had 21 hits in all to back a strong start from Zachary Lopez, who allowed only two hits and one run over five innings while walking three and striking out eight.

Ethan Gonzalez had three hits for the Golden Eagles, while Victorian hit a solo home run and scored twice. Penuelas also had two hits in the opener.

Jacob Badillo allowed only one run over the first three innings for the Golden Eagles, but tired a bit and gave up three more in the fourth before departing with one out in the fifth. Six Golden Eagle relievers followed.

Cal State LA will return to action on Friday with the opener of a three-game non-conference series against Cal State San Marcos beginning at 3 p.m.
