LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's baseball team had to settle for a second straight doubleheader split on Sunday.
The Golden Eagles, one week after splitting a non-conference doubleheader with Cal State Dominguez Hills, did the same in another non-conference doubleheader against Cal State San Marcos. Cal State LA won the opener, 9-4, behind a pair of long home runs from
Omar Gonzalez, but then dropped the nightcap, 13-2, at Reeder Field.
Cal State LA (8-7) had 11 hits and scored all nine runs by the fourth inning in the opener, but managed only four hits in the seven-inning nightcap. The Golden Eagles also committed four errors in the nightcap and Cal State San Marcos (9-2) got home runs from Zech Samayoa and Stephen Espinoza.
Gonzalez went 2-for-3 with three runs and four RBI in the opener. He hit a solo home run in the first inning to give the Golden Eagles a quick 1-0 lead and he added a three-run shot in the second inning to give the Golden Eagles a 6-1 lead.
Ben Lee hit a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning,
Ethan Gonzalez had a run-scoring single and
Carson Panarisi had a run-scoring double to give Cal State LA a 9-1 advantage.
Brandon Gutierrez allowed only one run through the first four innings before tiring in the fifth. He wound up being charged for three runs after allowing four hits and five walks while striking out six.
Jared Robles took over from there, allowing five hits and one run over the next four innings to pick up the win.
Ismael Quintero worked a scoreless ninth inning to wrap things up.
Omar Gonzalez, Lee,
Ethan Gonzalez, Panarisi and
Kai Penuelas had two hits each for the Golden Eagles in the opener.
In the nightcap, the Golden Eagles were silenced by Cal State San Marcos starter PJ Wendler, who allowed only three hits and one run over six innings.
Chris Lozano got the start for the Golden Eagles, while
Jake Spence pitched four solid innings of relief.
Alejandro Morales and
Isaac Quintero tossed the final two innings for the Golden Eagles.
Cesar Chavez went 2-for-2 with a run scored and one RBI for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State LA will return to action on Friday with the opener of a two-game series against Westcliff.Â
