WAIPAHU, HAWAII -- Cal State LA's baseball team completed its season-opening Hawaiian trip with a pair of victories on Sunday that gave head coach
Vince Beringhele a milestone victory.
The Golden Eagles swept host Chaminade, 4-2 and 9-3 on Sunday to give Beringhele 400 wins in his monumental Cal State LA career. Cal State LA (4-1) beat Chaminade three times and split a pair of contests with Hawaii Pacific on a successful three-day competition at Hans L'Orange Park.
Beringhele, who guided the Golden Eagles to their first-ever California Collegiate Athletic Association in 2013, has had 76 players earn All-Conference honors, 36 players make All-West Region teams and seven players earn All-America recognition during his tenure.
The Golden Eagles turned a good trip into a great one thanks to their two wins on Sunday. In the opener, the Golden Eagles got a run-scoring double from
Cesar Chavez to break a 2-2 tie and an insurance run on a run-scoring single from Albert Prado in the ninth to prevail, 4-2. In the nightcap, the Golden Eagles broke open a tight game with a five-run outburst in the seventh inning highlighted by a grand slam home run by
Omar Gonzalez for a 9-3 win.
The Golden Eagles got strong pitching in both games on Sunday.
Isaac Quintero and
Jared Robles gave up just four hits and two runs over eight innings and
Brandon Gutierrez tossed a perfect ninth inning for the first save of his Cal State LA career. Quintero got the start and gave up three hits and two runs over four innings and Robles followed with four shutout innings, allowing only one hit to pick up the win.Â
Ben Lee was 3-for-5 with one run scored and two RBI in the opener, while Prado and
Jonathan Manuel had two hits each and
Kadyn Victorian scored a pair of runs.
Cal State LA trailed 2-0, but a run-scoring single by Lee cut the deficit to 2-1 and a groundout from Lee in the seventh tied it. Chavez and Prado then delivered their late-inning heroics for the win. Quintero, Robles and Gutierrez combined to blank Chaminade over the final eight innings.
In the nightcap,
Jacob Badillo made his first Cal State LA start a good one, allowing four hits and two unearned runs over five innings to pick up the win.
Chris Lozano allowed only one run over the final two innings with three strikeouts for the save.
The Golden Eagles trailed 2-1 into the fourth inning before a two-run single by
Carson Panarisi gave them the lead for good. Prado hit a solo home run to stretch the lead to 4-2 and, after Chaminade cut the margin back to a single run at 4-3 in the bottom of the inning, Gonzalez slugged a grand slam home run to make it 8-3 in the seventh. Lee added a run-scoring single later in the inning and Lozano got the final three outs without incident.
Gonzalez was 4-for-4 with three runs scored and four RBI, while Prado was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and one RBI.Â
Cal State LA will play its 2026 home opener on Thursday against Northwest Nazarene in the opener of a four-game series.
