Golden Eagles Drop Two To Cal State East Bay

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's baseball team picked a bad time to run into the California Collegiate Athletic Association's hottest team.

The Golden Eagles were unable to slow down Cal State East Bay and dropped both ends of a conference doubleheader, 7-6 and 15-9, Saturday at Reeder Field. Cal State LA (18-26, 17-23 CCAA) has lost the first three games of the four-game series to Cal State East Bay (22-23, 19-20 CCAA), which has the longest current winning streak in the CCAA at seven games in a row.

The opener was much like Friday's opener when the Pioneers scored late to break a 6-6 tie. On Saturday, Omar Sanchez hit a tie-breaking home run in the eighth inning to give Cal State East Bay the lead.

In the nightcap, the Golden Eagles walked eight and hit two and the Pioneers took advantage. Cal State LA had 15 hits in the nightcap, including home runs from Jesse Burke and Michael Tillman, but still came up short.

Nick Moisant started the opener for the Golden Eagles and gave up eight hits and five earned runs in 6 1/3 innings. He walked three and struck out two. Johnny Virgen gave up just two hits and one run over the final 2 2/3 innings, but took the loss.

Dylan Dudley went eight innings and gave up nine hits and four earned runs to get the win for the Pioneers, while Mark Woinarowicz worked a scoreless ninth inning for his eight save of the season.

Nic Sandoval had two hits and scored twice for the Golden Eagles, while Adam Gordon and Alec Daily each drove in two runs.

Ryan McSwain had two home runs for the Pioneers, while Sanchez had the game-deciding home run and drove in two.

In the nightcap, the game got away from the Golden Eagles when Cal State East Bay scored four in the third and five in the fourth to erase a 3-2 deficit.

Jordan Peabody was 3-for-3 with a run scored and one RBI, while Sundahl was 3-for-4 with two RBI, Tillman was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI and Nate Alam was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

Dakota Connors was 2-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBI for the Pioneers, while Adam Hollar was 1-for-2 with two runs scored and three RBI. Brian Martinez went the distance despite allowing 15 hits and nine runs over seven innings.

Dylan Suppan started for the Golden Eagles and gave up four hits and four earned runs over three innings. Matt Miao pitched four innings of relief for the Golden Eagles and had two shutout innings before tiring in the seventh.

Cal State LA will conclude its season on Sunday with a Senior Day game against Cal State East Bay beginning at noon. The Golden Eagles will honor their 12 seniors in pre-game ceremonies.
