LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s baseball team had a long day Saturday at Reeder Field, but it was a successful one for the Golden Eagles.
The Golden Eagles beat the University of British Columbia, 16-5 and Saint Katherine College, 11-3, in nine-inning, non-conference games. Cal State L.A. had effective pitching outings from five pitchers in the doubleheader and collected a total of 33 hits as well.
Cal State L.A. also got a special appearance from former pitcher Ted Shimizu, who threw out the first pitch before the Golden Eagles' game against Saint Katherine College. Shimizu was a pitcher for Cal State L.A. in the 1960s.
Cal State L.A. got solid pitching from
Bryan Conant and
Jordan Cavazos to win the opener over British Columbia, 16-5. Conant worked six innings and gave up five runs, while Cavazos pitched three scoreless innings to finish up and picked up his first save.
Ryan Welker went 3-for-5 with two runs and four RBI and
Trevor Meleski hit a two-run home run to lead the offense.
Cam Firth and John Whaley hit home runs for British Columbia (9-5). Jerod Bartnik went 3-for-4 as well.
After British Columbia scored a run in the top of the first, Cal State L.A. erupted for eight runs in the bottom of the inning.
Anthony Lombardo had a two-run double,
Nick Osuna had a two-run single,
Trent Zaks had a run-scoring single and Welker had a bases-clearing double to account for the eight runs.
The Golden Eagles struck for five more in the fifth. Welker had a run-scoring single and
Dakota Hernandez had a two-run double to highlight the inning.
Meleski hit a two-run home run in the eighth to complete the scoring.
In the nightcap,
Ralph Ramirez went six strong innings to pick up his second win of the season. He allowed seven hits and two runs while walking two and striking out three.
James Mendez allowed only an unearned run over the next two innings and
Brandon Zavala pitched a scoreless ninth to end it.
Lombardo went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI and Welker had two more hits and two runs scored.
Paul Martinez had two hits and a pair of RBI.
Rodrigo Martinez had two hits and two runs scored and Meleski had two hits and two runs scored.
Rod Hill pitched well for Saint Katherine College (0-1). He allowed four earned runs in 4 1/3 innings. Trevor Collins had a scoreless inning in relief.
Daniel Piro went 3-for-4 for Saint Katherine College.
The Golden Eagles tied the game at 1-1 in the second on a run-scoring double by Zaks and took the lead with two runs in the third. One run scored on an error and the other on a run-scoring single by
Paul Martinez.
The Golden Eagles added two more runs in the fifth on a run-scoring single by Lombardo and a sacrifice fly by
Paul Martinez and two more in the sixth on a bases-loaded walk to Hernandez and a single by Lombardo.
Cal State L.A. scored four more times in the seventh on a run-scoring single by
Rodrigo Martinez, two on errors and the last on a sacrifice fly by Hernandez.
Cal State L.A. will complete its busy weekend with a single game against Saint Katherine College on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Reeder Field.
