Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Golden Eagles Bounce Back With Win Over Toros

LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s nationally-ranked men's soccer team had a nice bounce-back effort Saturday night against one of its best rivals.

The No. 24 Golden Eagles took the lead late in the first half and added three more goals in the second half of a 4-1 victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills at Jesse Owens Track. Cal State L.A. (4-1) was coming off a disappointing overtime loss to Cal Poly Pomona on Sunday and the Golden Eagles were indeed impressive in its first contest since that defeat.

Saturday's game was a non-conference contest between California Collegiate Athletic Association teams.

Cal State L.A. got goals from Marvin Iskra, Joshua Cortez, Brett Elliott and Jordan Payne to get the win. Mike Beigarten was outstanding in goal in the first half, making two big saves to keep the game scoreless while Cal State L.A. was finding its footing.

The Golden Eagles wound up with a 10-5 advantage in shots and a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.

It was a contentious battle with nine yellow cards and a red card issued during the game.

After Beigarten stopped two prime scoring opportunities midway through the opening half, the Golden Eagles broke through for the game's opening goal in the 41st minute. Abel Teferi started the play by getting the ball to Halil Tozar, who sent a beautiful pass into the box that Iskra drove home for his first goal of the season.

The Golden Eagles then struck for two goals in a four-minute span early in the second half to take control of the game. Cortez scored his first goal of the season with a one-touch finish of a pass from Sigifredo Torres in the 52nd minute. Four minutes later, Torres passed to Herbert Biste, who sent a pass to an onrushing Elliott, who finished strongly in the 56th minute to make it 3-1.

The Toros, despite playing a man down after the 74th minute, got on the board when Frankie Perez collected the ball after a scramble in the box and fired it home for his first goal of the season.

Cal State L.A., though, regained its three-goal advantage when Payne notched his fourth goal of the season in the 89th minute off a pass from Christopher Gardea.

Beigarten made four saves for the Golden Eagles, while Chase Gentry made four saves for the Toros.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Friday in its CCAA home opener against UC San Diego at 4:30 p.m.
