Golden Eagles Fall On Penalty Kicks In Tourney

POSTGAME INTERVIEWS

TURLOCK -- Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team saw its quest for a second straight California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Tournament title come to an unsatisfying end Friday night.

The Golden Eagles, the No. 2 seeds in the CCAA Tourney, battled to a 0-0 tie with No. 6 seed and tourney host Cal State Stanislaus before the Warriors advanced on penalty kicks, 4-2, at Warrior Stadium. Cal State L.A. (13-3-1) finished with its first tie of the season and will now await for the announcement of the NCAA Division II Championship Tournament field on Monday. The Golden Eagles were ranked fourth in the region heading into the CCAA Tournament and the top six teams in the region will advance.

Friday's match against Cal State Stanislaus was a physical, defensive battle from start to finish. The Golden Eagles finished with a 13-11 advantage in shots and had an 8-2 edge in corner kicks. All-Conference goalkeeper Mike Beigarten was strong once again, making four saves, including a pair of outstanding stops in the first half. Cal State L.A. recorded its 11th shutout of the season, which is just one behind the program's single-season record of 12.

There weren't many chances in Friday's scoreless battle, but the Golden Eagles finally started to get untracked in the second overtime period. Sigifredo Torres had a header early in the second overtime from close range that went just wide. The craziest play came a few minutes later when a ball was headed backward by a Cal State Stanislaus player on Cal State L.A.'s side of the field. With Cal State Stanislaus goalkeeper Clint Long well out of his goal, Halil Tozar launched a shot that Long eventually had to run down and carry beyond the end line for a Cal State L.A. corner kick. The Golden Eagles had two straight corner kicks, but couldn't convert either into a goal.

Kaan Gultoprak had a late shot that Long had to make a good save on to preserve the 0-0 tie.

The game was then decided on penalty kicks. Tozar and Herbert Biste were successful on Cal State L.A.'s first two tries, but Long saved the final two for the Warriors.

Jordan Payne, Torres and Troy Dumlao had two shots each for the Golden Eagles, while the defensive backline of Dane Nielsen, Randy Mendoza, Lucas Rio Torto and Gultoprak helped blank Cal State Stanislaus with 110 minutes of solid work.

Cal State L.A. will now await the NCAA Tournament selection show on ncaa.com on Monday at 4:30 p.m.
