Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Golden Eagles Rally For An Entertaining Win

LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team had to overcome some early adversity Sunday before roaring back for an important California Collegiate Athletic Association victory.

The Golden Eagles allowed a goal for the first time in seven games, but stormed back for three unanswered scores to post a 3-1 victory over Humboldt State at Jesse Owens Track. Cal State L.A. (11-2, 7-1 CCAA) won its seventh straight game, although the Golden Eagles had a program record-tying six shutouts in a row streak snapped.

The defending CCAA champs also clinched a spot in the six-team CCAA Championship Tournament with three matches still remaining.

Cal State L.A. had a 19-14 advantage in shots and both teams had four corner kicks. The Golden Eagles controlled play for large stretches of the game, but had to survive a late push from Humboldt State (8-5-1, 4-4 CCAA) to get the victory.

After Humboldt State's Connor Wilkinson scored on a free kick in the fifth minute, the Golden Eagles got goals from Shane Panther, Dane Nielsen and Sigifredo Torres to erase the deficit. Halil Tozar had a pair of assists and Herbert Biste also had an assist.

Mike Beigarten made four saves for the Golden Eagles, including a sensational deflection on a shot from point-blank range late in the second half with Cal State L.A. holding onto a 2-1 lead.

Panther tied the game for the Golden Eagles in the 11th minute on a spectacular goal. Tozar sent a free kick dangerously into the box and Panther headed it sharply into the net for his first goal of the season.

Nielsen then gave Cal State L.A. a 2-1 lead late in the first half when he got to a free kick from Biste and knocked it into the goal from close range in the 43rd minute. Nielsen scored his second goal of the season and his second in as many games.

Despite both teams having some quality chances thwarted by Beigarten and Humboldt State goalkeeper Javier Torres, the score remained tied until the Golden Eagles got the final goal in the last minute of play. Tozar took a blistering shot that Torres made a diving save to deflect away, but Sigifredo Torres got to the rebound first and fired it into the goal. It was Torres' fourth goal of the season.

The Golden Eagles honored their nine seniors – Mike Beigarten, Abel Teferi, Halil Tozar, Jordan Payne, Sammy Gonzalez, Shane Panther, Sigifredo Torres, Dane Nielsen and Isaac Briviesca – in ceremonies prior to the match.
