Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Golden Eagles Get A Big Game From Jordan Payne

LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team got Jordan Payne into the game at just the right time Friday.

The Golden Eagle senior scored a pair of goals in a 43-second span in the second half to lift the Golden Eagles to an important 2-0 California Collegiate Athletic Association win over Cal State Monterey Bay. Cal State L.A. (8-2, 4-1 CCAA) moved into a tie for second place in the CCAA with 12 points and won its fourth straight decision – all by shutout.

Mike Beigarten made three saves for the Golden Eagles and defenders Kaan Gultoprak, Dane Nielsen, Randy Mendoza and Lucas Rio Torto were solid for all 90 minutes on Friday.

The only goal Cal State L.A. has allowed in five conference games is a penalty kick in its opener against UC San Diego.

Although the Golden Eagles had an edge in possession, Cal State Monterey Bay (2-5-3, 1-3-1 CCAA) made things extremely tough with a determined effort. The game was scoreless until Payne, who re-entered the game in the 73rd minute, quickly went to work.

His first goal came in the 74th minute after a perfectly-placed pass by Herbert Biste. Jordan got the pass and put a shot into the upper far corner for his fifth goal of the season.

Payne made it 2-0 just 43 seconds later when Gultroprak chipped a pass into the box and Payne was able to loft a shot over Cal State Monterey Bay goalkeeper Evan Drake and into the net.

Payne now has a team-high six goals for Cal State L.A.

Drake made saves on Andre Bissmark and Gultoprak and a shot by Payne went high in the next five minutes.

Cal State L.A. finished the game with a 16-7 edge in shots, including a 10-2 advantage in the second half. Drake finished the game with five saves for the Otters.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Sunday with a home game against San Francisco State at 11:30 a.m.
