Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Golden Eagles Record Fifth Straight Shutout Win

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team kept its winning streak in tact with a hard-fought 1-0 win over San Francisco State Sunday at Jesse Owens Track.

The Golden Eagles got a goal late in the first half from Herbert Biste and a pair of key stops late to preserve the win. Cal State L.A. (9-2, 5-1 CCAA) won its fifth straight game and remained in second place in the CCAA. San Francisco State (5-5-2, 1-4-1) saw a late flurry go unfulfilled and suffered its second straight shutout defeat this weekend.

Cal State L.A. had a 15-9 advantage in shots, including a 9-4 edge in the second half. The Golden Eagles managed the game well after taking the lead in the final minute before halftime, but they still had to hang on after a pair of close San Francisco State chances down the stretch.

Biste got the only goal just 39 seconds before halftime. Troy Dumlao sent a beautiful pass down the right side to Biste, who ran it down and fired a perfectly-placed shot low and just inside the far post and past a diving San Francisco State goalkeeper Daniel Boyer. It was Biste's second goal of the season.

Mike Beigarten made six saves for Cal State L.A., while Boyer had three saves for the Gators.

Beigarten made a diving stop to deflect a header in the box by Cory Rodas that seemed destined for the net. The Gators got a corner kick and Emmanuel Serrano placed it dangerously in front of the goal. San Francisco State's Sam Merritt emerged from a scrum and fired a shot toward the goal, but Cal State L.A.'s Eduardo Almaraz was there to clear it away to preserve the shutout.

There were other scoring chances in a largely defensive battle. Cal State L.A.'s Jordan Payne, who scored two goals on Friday in a 2-0 win over Cal State Monterey Bay, had a shot go off the far post after a hard shot in the 23rd minute. Boyer also made his best save of the game in the 57th minute when he was able to get a piece of a header by Dane Nielsen to keep it out of the net.

The Golden Eagle defense kept the Gators mostly contained until the late flurry in the final minute of play.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Friday with a home game against Sonoma State at 7 p.m.
