Box Score 2 LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s baseball team worked double time on Saturday in a California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader sweep over Cal State East Bay.

The Golden Eagles turned a season-high five double plays while beating the Pioneers in the opener, 6-3, and then hung on for an 11-9 victory in the nightcap. Cal State L.A. (24-13, 21-6 CCAA) stretched its winning streak to eight games and pulled to within one game of first place in the conference.

David Armas# pitched a complete game in the opener, allowing nine hits and three runs. He was backed by some outstanding defense and didn't give up a run after the first inning. He improved to 6-1 on the season. Sean Becker went eight innings for Cal State East Bay (24-13, 14-13 CCAA) and gave up 11 hits and six runs.

Brandon Quintero# struck out a season-high 10 batters in the nightcap while going six innings. He improved his record to 7-3. #
Adan Cabrales# entered the game with the bases loaded and no one out in the ninth inning and induced a big double play grounder and finished the game with a fly to left to record his second save of the season.

Niko Garcia# had a big day at the plate in the nightcap, going 3-for-4 with three RBI.

Seven of the nine runs in the opener came in the first inning. Cal State East Bay struck for three runs thanks to a two-run double from Charlie Sharrer and a run-scoring single by David Castillo.

Cal State L.A. responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning. #

Jeremy Weber# opened the inning with back-to-back doubles and #
Tyler Christian# doubled in Weber to make it 3-2 and when #
Cody Doyle# scored all the way from first after an outfield error, the game was tied at 3-3. Garcia then singled to right with two outs to give the Golden Eagles the lead.

Both pitchers settled down after the first and no one scored again until Masik drilled a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth. In the top of the inning, #
Casey Ryan# threw out the potential tying run at the plate from left field to preserve the lead.
Garcia also had a strong game at shortstop for the Golden Eagles, turning a nifty double play in the fourth when he ran down a ball by the second base bag, tapped his toe on the bag and fired to first to complete the play. In the ninth, he made a sensational stop of a ball up the middle and fired to first in time for the first out of the final inning.

The second game was not nearly as clean as the two teams combined for six errors and four passed balls.

The Pioneers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first after a run-scoring double by Brandon Alexander and a passed ball. Cal State L.A. answered back by sending 10 batters to the plate and scoring six runs. Masik walked and scored after a single by Weber and an outfield error. Doyle walked and Christian singled to score Weber and tie the game. #
Ryan Cooperstone# doubled down the left-field line to make it 3-2 and Garcia followed with a two-run single to give the Golden Eagles to make it 5-2. Garcia eventually came around to score on a passed ball.

The Pioneers closed to within 6-5 after one run in the second and two in the third, but the Golden Eagles scored four times in the third to take a 10-5 lead. Garcia had a run-scoring double and later scored on a wild pitch, #
Samuel Arce# delivered a sacrifice fly and Masik scored on a passed ball.

Doyle doubled and scored a run in the fourth to make it 11-7, which is what the score was entering the seventh. Cabrales came on with the bases loaded and no one out and got a double play grounder as a run scored to make it 11-8. An infield single by Eren Miravalles cut the lead to 11-9, but Cabrales got Brandon Alexander to fly out to left to end the game.
