Golden Eagles Endure Another Frustrating Day

Game 1 Box

Game 2 Box

SAN BERNARDINO -- Cal State L.A.'s baseball team was unable to shake its recent struggles and completed a lost weekend against Cal State San Bernardino.

The Golden Eagles dropped both ends of a California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader to the Coyotes Saturday at Fiscalini Field, losing the first game, 6-4 and falling the seven-inning nightcap, 9-7. Cal State L.A. (11-11, 7-9 CCAA) has lost four straight games and eight of its last nine games. The Golden Eagles have played 10 straight games on the road and are just 2-8 during that stretch.

In both games, Cal State L.A. faced big deficits heading into the final inning and rallied to get the tying or go-ahead runs at the plate. Both times, though, the Coyotes (12-9, 9-7 CCAA)  held on to win.

Daniel Duran had a pair of home runs in the nightcap for the Golden Eagles.

The Golden Eagles erased an early 3-0 deficit in the nightcap thanks to a run-scoring single by Brian Compton in the fourth inning and back-to-back home runs from Cliff Quick and Duran in the fifth inning. Cal State San Bernardino, though, took advantage of a Cal State L.A. error in the bottom of the fifth and scored two unearned runs off Cal State L.A. starter Gabriel Asakura to take the lead for good.

Cal State L.A. got one run back in the top of the sixth inning on a run-scoring single by David Compton, but had the potential game-tying run thrown out at the plate later in the inning. The Coyotes then added four runs on five hits in the bottom of the sixth to take a 9-4 lead.

Duran led off the top of the seventh with his second home run of the game to make it 9-5. James Wharton and Jeremy Weber drew walks and Manny Acosta was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Wharton scored and the runners on advanced on a balk to make it 9-6. Joe Park singled in a run to make it 9-7, but the Golden Eagles ended the game with back-to-back strikeouts with the bases loaded.

Gabriel Asakura went five innings for the Golden Eagles and gave up nine hits and five runs, three of them earned. After allowing a three-run home run in the second inning to Cal State San Bernardino's Paul Eshleman, Asakura didn't allow another run until the two unearned runs in the fifth.

The Golden Eagles trailed 6-0 heading into the eighth inning of the opener, but got on the board thanks to a sacrifice fly by Duran. Nick Rodarte slugged a three-run home run in the top of the ninth to close the gap to 6-4, but that's as close as the Golden Eagles would get.

Jesus Cuevas was 2-for-5, Park was 2-for-3 and Compton was 2-for-4. Justin Harr started for the Golden Eagles and gave up eight hits and six runs, only two of them earned, in seven innings of work. Sergio Luna pitched a scoreless inning of relief..
