SAN FRANCISCO -- Cal State L.A.'s baseball team used its biggest offensive output of the season to end its four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association series with San Francisco State on a positive note.
The Golden Eagles got a season-high 19 hits and beat the Gators, 17-6, Sunday at Maloney Field. Cal State L.A. (8-10, 6-6 CCAA) took three of the four games in the series, but the first two wins were by one run each.
Sam Wiley went 5-for-6 with three RBI to lead the Golden Eagles, while
Chris Matzner had four hits, scored three times and drove in two.
Cliff Quick had three hits and drove in three runs, while
Matt Miraldi hit a big 3-run home run in the fourth inning that erased a 5-4 deficit.
Mark Sunga scored three runs for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State L.A. got outstanding relief pitching from
Rory Young, #J.R. Bromberg
and Matt Clark#, who held San Francisco State to just one run on four hits over the final 6 1/3 innings. Young blanked the Gators for 3 1/3 innings on just one hit to pick up the victory.
San Francisco State (7-11, 2-6 CCAA) had 11 hits, including a solo home run by Geoff Downing. Nick Nyman had a pair of hits and drove in two runs for the Gators.
The Golden Eagles were blanked in the first inning, but scored runs in every inning after that. Quick had a two-run single in the second inning to tie the game at 2-2 and Matzner had a two-run double in the fourth to tie the game at 4-4.
After San Francisco State took a 5-4 lead, Miraldi followed two-out singles by
Mario Ramirez and Wiley with a three-run home run to give the Golden Eagles the lead for good.
Joe Park had a run-scoring double to highlight a two-run fifth inning,
Brendan McQuaid had a run-scoring single in the sixth, Wiley had a run-scoring single in the seventh and the Golden Eagles scored five times in the eighth to take a 16-5 lead.
Jesus Campos singled in one run, Quick singled in another, Campos scored on a wild pitch and Wiley contributed a two-run triple to close out the inning.
After Downing hit a solo home run in the eighth inning for the Gators and the Golden Eagles completed the scoring with an unearned run when
Max Moya came around to score on an error.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Friday with a the beginning of a four-game series at Cal State Monterey Bay.
