Golden Eagles Drop A Slugfest To CS San Bernardino

SAN BERNARDINO – Cal State L.A.'s baseball team got hurt by the long ball Friday in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game in San Bernardino.
 
The Golden Eagles surrendered three three-run home runs to Cal State San Bernardino and fell to the Coyotes, 12-9, Friday at Fiscalini Field. Cal State L.A. (5-7, 3-3 CCAA) lost for the second straight day to the Coyotes (9-2, 9-1 CCAA), who sit atop the CCAA standings.
 
Cal State L.A. scored five times in the ninth inning to make things interesting, but the Coyotes finally shut the door to get the win.
 
Sam Wiley had three hits and drove in three runs for Cal State L.A., while Cliff Quick and Mark Sunga hit solo home runs. Cal State L.A. had 14 hits in the game.
 
Cal State San Bernardino, though, finished with 17 hits against four Cal State L.A. pitchers, including three-run home runs from Erik Ornelas, Bryant Veiga and Leland Sisco.
 
Anthony Lopez worked the first three innings and allowed nine hits and six runs for the Golden Eagles. He fell to 1-2 on the season. Rory Young gave up four hits and three runs over the next two innings. Camron Collard pitched two scoreless innings and Nathan Halverson gave up a three-run home run to Veiga in his one inning of work.
 
Cal State L.A. erased an early 2-0 deficit with a pair of runs in the third inning. Joe Park singled up the middle and took third on a double by Matt Miraldi. Jesus Campos drove in a run with an infield single and Miraldi scored on a single by Wiley.
 
Cal State San Bernardino scored four times in the bottom of the inning to take the lead for good. Sisco's three-run home run was the big hit of the inning.
 
The Golden Eagles got a run in the fourth on when Miraldi singled home Park and Cal State L.A. made it 6-4 in the sixth when Sunga hit a solo home run, his first of the season. The Coyotes, though, got a three-run home run from Ornelas in the bottom of the inning to stretch their lead to 9-4. The lead grew to 12-4 in the eighth when Veiga hit his three-run homer.
 
Cal State L.A. managed to score five runs in the ninth thanks in part to two Cal State San Bernardino errors. Sunga singled and took third on a two-out single by Campos. Mario Ramirez doubled in one run and Wiley followed by reaching on an error as two runs scored. Quick homered to make it 12-9 and Chris Matzner doubled to keep the inning going. Cal State San Bernardino finally got the final out to end the contest.
 
Cal State L.A. and Cal State San Bernardino will conclude the four-game series with a doubleheader on Sunday at Reeder Field beginning at 11 a.m. The doubleheader was originally scheduled for Saturday, but has been pushed back a day because of forecasted rain.
