No. 5 Golden Eagles Battle To 1-1 Tie With Dominguez Hills

Box Score

CARSON -- Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team was fit to be tied in its California Collegiate Athletic Association opener at Cal State Dominguez Hills.

The Golden Eagles got an equalizing goal from CCAA Player of the Week Federico Cino in the 54th minute and went on to a 1-1 tie with the Toros Tuesday at Toro Field. Cal State L.A. (2-0-1, 0-0-1), which climbed from sixth to fifth in the national rankings released on Tuesday, has now given up just one goal in each of its first three games.

Cal State L.A. held a 14-11 advantage in shots against the Toros (1-1-1, 0-0-1), while both teams had seven corner kicks.

Scoring chances figured to be at a premium in a meeting between the 2008 NCAA Division II West Region championship game participants. Cal State Dominguez Hills won that meeting in Carson and went on to win a national championship.

Both defenses were sturdy, as usual. Cal State L.A. had six shots on goal, while the Toros had one. Cal State L.A. goalie Tobias Hummel did not make a save, while Cal State Dominguez Hills goalie Marcus Dickerson had five.

The Golden Eagles faced a deficit for the first time this season when the Toros' Andrew Marinez sent a header into the net just 6:53 into the game. Scott Locken picked up the assist.

Cal State L.A. responded nicely and had several scoring chances over the next 10 minutes. A shot by Cino was saved by Dickerson, a header by Mickey Daly following a corner kick by Kristian Gaustad went high and a shot by Aza Gomez after another corner kick by Gaustad was high. Finally, a shot by Jason Swope also went high.

Cal State Dominguez Hills opened the second half with a flurry that included a pair of corner kicks and a shot that was blocked, but the Golden Eagles quickly grabbed the momentum and tied the game. Cino drilled his third goal of the season -- and third in the past two games -- in the 54th minute to even things up.

Cal State L.A. had a pair of shots in the overtime periods, one in each. A shot by Swope went wide in the first overtime period, while a shot by Simon Volk off a corner kick by Gaustad was blocked.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Friday with a home game against Cal Poly Pomona.
