No. 3 Golden Eagles Finish Busy Week With A Shutout Win

Box Score

LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team completed a busy week of California Collegiate Athletic Association competition with another defensive gem.

The Golden Eagles scored one goal in each half and made them stand up in a 2-0 win over Cal State Stanislaus Sunday at Jesse Owens Track. Cal State L.A. (9-0-1, 7-0-1 CCAA), ranked third in the nation, has now won seven straight matches. The win also enabled Cal State L.A. to maintain a six-point edge in the CCAA South Division.

Federico Cino scored his team-high sixth goal of the season in the 20th minute with assists from Mickey Daly and Mauricio Barrett and Spencer Tripp notched his first goal of the season in the 48th minute with an assist from Chris Rangel.

The Golden Eagle defense did the rest. The Golden Eagles enjoyed a 17-7 edge in shots and goalie Tobias Hummel made two saves to record the shutout.

The win capped a successful week for the Golden Eagles, who beat Cal State Dominguez Hills, 1-0, on Wednesday, beat Chico State, 2-1, on Friday and then beat Cal State Stanislaus on Sunday.

Javier Rosales made five saves for Cal State Stanislaus (6-4-0, 3-4-0).

Cal State Stanislaus had the first big chance of the game. Andrew Ruiz accepted a pass from Edgar Santana and took a hard shot, but Hummel made a sprawling save just four minutes into the game.

Cal State L.A. stepped up the pressure and Barrett got off a strong bid to the left corner of the goal after a corner kick by Kristian Gaustad, but Rosales made a diving deflection to set up another corner kick. Barrett took the second corner kick and this one resulted in a goal. Daly was the first to head it and he got the ball to Cino, who headed it into the left corner of the goal.

The Golden Eagles had a pair of strong bids to Gaustad later in the first half, but Rosales made a diving deflection to stop one and the other shot sailed wide.

Tripp gave the Golden Eagles a 2-0 lead in the 48th minute when he drilled a shot from about 30 yards out just over the outstretched arms of Rosales and just below the crossbar.

The Golden Eagles prevented Cal State Stanislaus from mounting a comeback. Hummel needed just one save in the second half to preserve the shutout. Cal State L.A. has posted shutouts in four of its last five games.

Cal State L.A. will return to action in a big CCAA game at Cal State San Bernardino.
