LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team pulled out another close victory Friday in a California Collegiate Athletic Association contest against Cal Poly Pomona.
The Golden Eagles played with a man advantage for the final 65 minutes and went on to hold off a determined Bronco squad, 2-1, at Jesse Owens Track. Cal State L.A., ranked fifth in the nation, enjoyed a 24-6 advantage in shots, but had to hang on down the stretch to secure the win.
Cal State L.A. (3-0-1, 1-0-1) has now posted all three of its victories by 2-1 scores.
Jason Swope and
Federico Cino combined to make a potent offensive punch for the Golden Eagles. Swope scored both Cal State L.A. goals – one in each half – and Cino, the CCAA Player of the Week for his efforts last week, drew assists on both of them.
Cal Poly Pomona goalie Brad Jones had a spectacular game and made 12 saves to keep the Broncos (2-2-0, 0-1-1) within striking distance.
Tobias Hummel made one save in goal for the Golden Eagles and it was a spectacular one, a diving stop to thwart an attempt by Dustin Suppe in the 16
th minute.
Swope put the Golden Eagles ahead, 1-0, in the 21
st minute.
Kristian Gaustad started the scoring play by passing to Cino, who eluded a Bronco defense and sent a pass to Swope, who knocked it into the right corner of the net for his first goal of the season.
The Broncos, after falling behind 1-0, saw defender Marc Glogowsky sent off with a red card after he batted a shot attempt by Cal State L.A.'s
Aza Gomez that was headed for the goal with his hand in the 26
th minute. Gaustad took the penalty kick for the Golden Eagles, but his shot clanked off the right post and stayed out.
Cal State L.A. continued to pressure Cal Poly Pomona, but had to settle for the 1-0 lead at halftime.
Swope made it 2-0 in the 54th minute when Cino fed him with a nice pass and he drilled it into the net while in full stride toward the net and the Golden Eagles seemed to have things in hand.
The Broncos, though, started to pick up the pace and pulled to within one goal when Kevin Ramirez sent a hard shot in the box from straightaway that just eluded Hummel's fingertips and settled in under the crossbar for the score.
Jones made some big saves to keep the Broncos within one goal, deflecting a rebound attempt from point-blank range by Derrick Horn after he had pounced on a save off a shot by
Spencer Tripp. Tripp had another bid just two minutes after the Broncos' goal, but Jones made a one-handed deflection to prevent a goal.
Cal State L.A.'s defense took it from there to secure the win.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Sunday for another CCAA contest at home, this one against Cal State San Bernardino.
